What a Week...

We had excellent weather and fishing all week, a perfect "chamber of commerce" week. Pilchards (Bait) have been slowly moving away from the middle of Tampa Bay and showing up to spawn on the grass flats near Anna Maria Island. The Trout have been making their way to the passes, including Longboat Pass, to get ready to spawn as well. Most of Trout we have been catching this week have been just under the size limit to keep. Many of the Trout can be found on the deeper grass edges along main channels. A small split shot or weight can help you get the bait to stay in the target zone for a longer period of time when fishing for Trout. The Snook have started really congregating in large numbers in preparation for their move to the passes. This week I have seen some Snook schools in the 50+ range, with most being around 20 or so. The Snook bite still remains the best bet. Snook season closes May 1st so there is still time to snag a keeper and bring it home for dinner. This week we were finally able to start catching Redfish in good numbers. We have started seeing more and more fish show up in numbers and they are hungry. Most of the Snook and Redfish have been caught against the mangroves on the top end of the high tide through the first part of the outgoing. I didn't have anyone that wanted to try Tarpon fishing this week but I know they have started showing up just by the massive schools of threadfins (bait) that I have observed showing up this past week. Another week or so and the Tarpon bite should really start to turn on.
