Fishing Fort Lauderdale with Topshotfishing and Capt. Zsak

Claus Winhard from Germany chartered by himself the Topshotfishing team to do some deep sea big game sport fishing in Fort Lauderdale. This was Claus' first experience in fishing. We had winds out of the east at 15 mph with seas running 3-5 ft., temperatures in the mid 80's.

On our way out we stopped to purchase a dozen live Goggle Eyes from T&T Bait. Our plan was to do some kite fishing. Fifteen minutes after leaving the dock, we were at the sea buoy in Fort Lauderdale, which is in 120 ft. of water. If you venture off another ¼ of a mile, you would be in 500 ft. of water due to our extreme drop off.

We started out fishing with two plainers down – one with a 3 ½ blue reflector drone spoon and the other with a pink and blue sea witch in front of a double hooked Mullet strip. For surface baits we went with two Ballyhoos and a daisy chain teaser. As we trolled the reefs, we caught a Kingfish on the 3 ½ blue reflector drone spoon.

With blue water pushing in, it was time to set up the kite. As I crossed over the color change, the other plainer went down. As the line exited the reel at a high rate of speed, I knew it would be a good fish. Twenty minutes later, Dave, our mate, leaned over the side and gaffed a 24 lb. Black Fin Tuna.

Then we went into kite fishing. We put out two kites and two live Goggles Eyes from each kite. Our first fish was on the left long kite as Claus reeled in a Black Tip Shark, which was brought to the side of the boat for picture taking and release. We reset the kite, and wound up catching four gaffers Mahi Mahi's.

With Claus happy with his catch and time having run out, it was time to return to the dock. The angler retired into the a/c salon to relax on the ride back to the dock at Bahia Mar, 801 Seabreeze Blvd. Fort Lauderdale 33316.
