Downtown Vancouver Salmon Fishing Report

January 23 Report

Vancouver Saltwater Fishing for Chinook:

Our Winter Chinook / King fishery has been spotty in English Bay with one day decent and the next slow. The Bay has been best around the QB marker with depths in the 100 foot to 120 foot range for the largest fish. A few of our local guides have done quite well fishing the Ambleside area in deep water using spoons with and without flasher. Most of the English Bay fish seem to be Red meat Chinook while the West side seems to be mixed White and Red. The harbour seals are still a very big problem so be prepared to loose most if not all of your fish to these predators.

The West side of Bowen Island seems to be the most consistent fishery we have right now with most days producing fish in the 8 to 15 pound range. But again, it's Winter fishing and you just never know. Tunstall Bay fished on the bottom with Flamin Hans, Punk Skunk, Purple Haze and Green and White glow spoons with and without flasher have done most of the damage. A few of the Howe Sounds fishers have started using bait with some good results. Hutt Island down to the waterfall is also a good place to try if Tunstall is not happening. With these Northerly Winds you might see a bit of chop in this area. SE winds are predicted for the next week so this would be a great place to find calm water - and fish !

Some of the keys to Winter fishing is: find the bait - you find the bait you should find the fish. Also try to run your tackle very close to the bottom for best results. This can be a bit of a challenge if you only have 2 downriggers but try it.

Standard tackle used in this fishery: Spoons, Gypsy and Gator in Punk Skunk, Flamin Hans, Cop Car and Green and White have worked well for us with and without flasher. Hootchies also produce so change up your gear if you are in a slow period.

The weather is chilly but the seas have been very kind to us so far this Winter. Bundle up and bring your coffee and spend a few hours on the water for this great fishery.

Good luck this Winter.

We now offer Winter rates so if you want to get out at a reduced price give us a call and we will set it up for you.

Tight lines.
