Weekly Fishing Reports (Smithers, Terrace, Kitimat, Prince Rupert and Meziadin North)

Noel Gyger

November 14 to November 21, 2010

Dear Fishing Friends:

SUMMARY: Weather is extremely cold. Daytime highs of only minus 5 degrees C. Steelhead and Trout are the only species targeted now. It is just too cold for fishing.

The Skeena River is in good shape.

The Kalum River is in good shape.

The Zymoetz (Copper) River is in good shape.

The Lakelse River is in good shape.

The Kitimat River had clear blue skies and sunshine all week but there was a cold bite in the air with strong winds. The weather was very nice for this time of year providing you dressed with warm fleece.

Douglas Channel; The sunny clear blue skies were accompanied with strong winds which discouraged most anglers from venturing out. Ferd Wuensche reports sneaking out for a bit on Wednesday and reports losing 2 Winter Chinook before the winds got too strong. Check out the Ron Wakita report below.

Prince Rupert; As predicted, the Winter Chinook have arrived. For those fishermen who venture out looking for some action on the water, I have heard of many anglers catching their limit of Chinooks in the past several days, averaging from 5 to 25lbs. This week guide reports came from Ron Wakita, Ariel Kuppers, Tracey Hittel and Jeff Carlson. Thank you to the fishing guides who sent reports and photos. It is very much appreciated!

RIVER FISHING Lots of day bookings available for Zymoetz (Copper River) in November and December BEST fly fishing for Steelhead in the world awaits you. Contact Noel noel@noelgyger.ca to book NOW!

OCEAN FISHING Winter Chinook and Crabbing in the Kitimat Harbour is Red Hot right now. To book your charter boat, please contact Noel Gyger anytime. Phone 250-635-2568 E-mail noel@noelgyger.ca

NOW BOOKING for 2011: Let me know, if I can be of service to book you with the "best" fishing guide and/or fishing lodges for both river and ocean. There are NO extra charges to book through me, just a lot of free information and advice from a person with years and years of fishing and fish guiding experience. Lakelse River

Is in good shape and fishing for Steelhead and Trout is excellent. Please do not target the Coho as it is closed and most of them are on their spawning reds now. Both spin and fly is working well but may be too cold to fish.

Skeena River

The Skeena River is in good shape. Fishing for Steelhead and Trout is fair but it is getting late for Steelhead.

Zymoetz (Copper) River

Tracey Hittel – Kitimat Lodge

Hi Noel, I fished the Kalum yesterday, November 17th. Lots of coho in spawn. Rivers perfect, not too low and it was so cold I kept my reel and rod in the water to keep from freezing up. We left the coho to play and spawn as well many eagles in the area waiting for a meal and even watched them lock talons in mid air above us. We had the river to ourselves and it was so serene, and friggin cold, the trees whispered in the wind and when we hit the 3rd pool we had aggressive steelhead takes but no pictures to send you, just the one of the huge coho my fishing partner held for me while I took his pic. My waders were frozen solid while driving the boat and felt like a statue. Once the boat was loaded the heater in the truck warmed us up and was a godsend. Did I say we had an awesome time? And yes winter is finally here!

Tight lines. Tracey Hittel

Help me plan my guided fishing trip

What do I want to fish for (Salmon, Steelhead or Trout)? When is the best time? What is the best way to fish for them? How long is the guided day? Do we fish from a boat or walk and wade? What kind of boats do the guides use (drift boat, jet boat or raft, etc)? What have other anglers caught at this time? Are there any pictures? What was the biggest fish? What was the weather like? How do I get there? What do I need to bring? Are there any testimonials? YES, go here http://www.noelgyger.ca/testimonials.htm for testimonials.

To start to answer any of the above questions and more please check out the Past Fishing Reports webpage at http://www.noelgyger.ca/past-fishing-reports.htm There are links there that go back to fishing reports from 1996 right up until today. Who should I contact for more information? Contact Noel Gyger noel@noelgyger.ca he will be more than happy to help you.

Kitimat River

We had clear blue skies and sunshine all week but there was a cold bite in the air with strong winds. The weather was very nice for this time of year providing you dressed with warm fleece.

Accordingly the river conditions were really good and Trout anglers who ventured out did very well.

Nov 16 Ariel Kuppers fished with Jessie Houston and Chris Matos. They landed over 10 Trout on the Kitimat River using Gibbs http://www.gibbsfishing.com/ floats and the "Kitimat Combo". The "Kitimat Combo" consists of Berkley http://www.purefishing.com/ Power Bait 3" Worms combined with Bait Barns http://www.bubbasbaitbarn.com/ Dew worms. Ariel also caught a fairly bright Coho considering the time of year. Well done guys!

Nov 17 Travis James and Justin Lowes fished the Kitimat River and landed 16 Trout in total.

Summary

Trout fishing on the Kitimat River will continue to be very good provided the weather continues to be clear and sunny. Smart money says "Get out and get some while the getting is good". We could get snow any time now.

Douglas Channel

The sunny clear blue skies were accompanied with strong winds which discouraged most anglers from venturing out. Ferd Wuensche reports sneaking out for a bit on Wednesday and reports losing 2 Winter Chinook before the winds got too strong.

It's really a shame that we received strong winds this week because the Winter Chinook season was really starting to get good. Hopefully when the winds subside the Winter Chinook will still be hanging around in the Kitimat Harbor. Stay tuned!

Thank You to everyone who provided photos and info for this Fishing Report.

We are booking for next year. We have Gift Certificates for Guided Fishing Trips. They would make excellent Christmas Gifts. Any interested anglers, please contact Noel Gyger noel@noelgyger.ca

Thank You to everyone for providing photos and info to this Fishing Report.

Good Health and Good Fishing!

Sincerely and Cheers Ron Wakita

Hi Noel, I have a client/friend that I've been fishing with in the Terrace and Smithers area for the past 10 years. We have been looking recently at land in order to put up a small fishing cabin but we've noticed that most land listings in the Terrace area are for large plots. I was wondering if you know of anyone that has a larger plot of land on the Skeena (around Usk would be perfect) that would be interested in subdividing out a section of about 1 or 2 acres. Walking access to Skeena would be nice but not necessary.

I would be able to handle the legal work and associated costs to subdivide, so I just need someone who might be interested in selling off a small piece of their land that they aren't using. Also, it would need to have vehicle access which we could do by registered right of way across sellers prop if unavailable otherwise. Contact Noel Gyger noel@noelgyger.ca if you have such property and I will put you in contact with the buyer.

About The Author: Captain Noel Gyger

Company: Noel Gyger Guided Fishing Adventures

Area Reporting: Northwest British Columbia Canada

Bio: My fishing and guiding history I was born in Smithers, B.C. Canada on December 25, 1946. I grew up there and fished the whole northwest area with my Grandpa, Percival (Percy) Benjamin Emerson. He loved to fly fish. His favorite Trout fly was the Royal Coachman. He built a cabin on Babine Lake where I spent most of my summer school holidays fishing and enjoying the outdoors. Thanks to him, I am hooked on "Sportfishing" and I've come to love every aspect of it. My lifetime goals are to save the wild Salmon, Steelhead and Trout of the entire northwest area of British Columbia and establish a "Quality" sport fishing guiding industry. These are lofty goals but I will strive every day to achieve them. They are "my life long calling". I have been married for 39 years and have three daughters and seven grandchildren. I am the owner of Noel Gyger - Weekly Fishing Report and Guided Fishing Adventures of 4012 Best Street, Terrace, BC Canada V8G 5R8 Tel/Fax (250) 635-2568 Cell (250) 631-2678 E-mail noel@noelgyger.ca Website www.noelgyger.ca I started fishing the Terrace area in the 1970's. On May 24, 1983 I assisted my friend to land an 83-pound Chinook on the Kalum River. It was the river record. That experience changed my life and I started into the fish guiding industry and began exploring and fishing rivers by jet boat. I pioneered drift boats on the Kalum and Kitimat Rivers and taught many folks how to row them. I've owned a fishing lodge and guide business (Northwest Fishing Guides & Lodge) along with my wife from 1986 to 2001 when we sold it and retired but my love for the industry is just too great and after five years - I am back.
