Monday was a 10 as far as fly fishing conditions, and I was lucky enough to be able to take advantage of it.

Capt. Rich Waldner called me and said "how soon can you get to my house?" I was actually on the water catching specks in my 22-Skeeter, but it took all of 30 seconds to pick up and head back to my house. I quickly put the boat in the hoist and made tracks south to meet up with Capt. Rich and Scud Yates, who had driven over from Ft. Walton Beach, FL.

By 9:00 a.m. we were on the water near the Gulf and Scud took the first up. A redfish was spotted crawling in only 6 inches of water with it's back completely out of the water. Scud made a perfect cast with his E-Z Epoxy crab fly and the 12-pounder streaked across the mud flat ripping line from the spool on Scud's reel.

Scud landed a couple of more reds between 9 and 10 pounds, then I took a turn. I spotted a long fish crusing in about 18 inches of water. After botching the first cast, I put the crab fly right in the fishes nose and strip set the hook. The water exploded as the fish ripped allmy fly line and went into the backing. Capt. Rich came down from the poling platform to unhook and weigh the feisty 13-pounder.

Later in the day, the black drum started to eat and we were in for a slug-fest. I landed a 36-pounder on an 8-weight outfit when it slurped down my crab fly. Scud got a nice one too after he battled the beast for about 15 minutes.

We enjoyed a glorious day, but had a few more clouds pop up than we wanted, making it hard at times to spot the fish before we poled over them and blew them out.

Scud got the fish of the day - a 25-pound red on fly. I took top honors in black drum with three in the 30 + pound class.

Tuesday was even better than yesterday with bright sun all day and light winds. I'm waiting to hear from my client, Len Allison, on the success of his trip and will post that later.

If you want to go fly fishing, give me a call and I'll get you out with one of the top fly guides in the area for a day of chasing "Cajun Bonefish."
