December is a good month to find tailing redfish on the shallow grass flats of Pine Island Sound. The cooler winter months bring along with it super low tides and northeasterly winds which create an even lower tide keeping the water out. Concentrate your search for tailing reds on the lush grassflats that are teeming with baitfish, shrimp or crabs. We've been catching good numbers of average-size reds tailing in anywhere from 6" to 2ft of water. They've been in the 20-26" range as well as several over 30". Artificials of choice have been weedless skimmer jigs, soft plastics, and topwaters. Plenty of action on the fly as well using poppers in the early morning and small baitfish and shrimp and crab patterns.
