Kabetogama/Namakan Fishing Report 12/8/08

An Abundance of cold weather and several small snowfalls have made this area a winter wonderland.

Angling and spearing has contributed to small villages on the ice. At present the spearing enthusiasts out number the anglers as per usual, early in the season.

Reports on spearing results are spotty, but most spear-ers seem content with the activity. Anglers are just beginning to set up on deeper waters as the ice improves.

The sub-zero weather which favors sportsmen is quickly improving ice conditions and the park service has plans to begin checking ice this week for trail safety.

Caution is still advised even where ice appears adequate, the lake draw-down is creating a swift current and does cause some areas of weak ice.

Most shallow bays have 8-10" of good ice and the main lake will be checked this week.

Snowmobile trails are covered with light snow and as the grounds and swamps freeze up the groomers will begin getting the trails ready.
