Kabetogama/Namakan Fishing Report July 2, 2007
This was another good week of fishing for most folks. Anglers found a decent bite for all species in spite of the mayflies.
The walleye bite was scattered and sporadic. Folks caught walleyes, but the harvest size, less than 17", moved shallow to deep, 30'+ from day to day.
Crawlers and leeches were the best bait choices, anglers reported both worked well. I suggest you use what you are most proficient with.
Make spinners optional as well as colored hooks; often times a slightly different presentation works better than others.
Slip sinker rigs cover the most area; change speeds to trigger action or for better spinner presentation.
The structures near the flats have been producing; as well as windblown sides of reefs and islands. The eastern end of Kabetogama seems to favor walleye action as the lake warms up.
Northern pike remain active along weed edges and on weed tops. Favorite bays this time of year — Mud, Daily, Nebraska, Blind Ash, and, of course, Lost Bay.
Smallmouth taking a time out, probably due to post-spawn action, will pick up rapidly now; they tend to like rocky structures where crayfish can be found.
There is lots of wildlife being spotted this past week. Moose swimming in Mud Bay; mama bears and cubs at Ellsworth Rock Gardens, deer nearly everywhere.
