I had the pleasure of fishing with drew and justin lawson on the last day of february 2011. we left the dock before first light to look for tarpon. the flats fishing off key west has been fantastic and this day would be no different, justin hooked the first tarpon at just around 7 and landed him very quickly. we set up again and drew hooks up minutes later to land the midsize tarpon you see in the blog. The tide starts to slack so i decide to head west of key west to fish for some tailing permit, are first shot come about 10 minutes after i started polling my flats skiff. justin made a few bad cast but then puts the crab where it need to be and the permit races over tails up and somehow eats the crab without getting hooked. I move to a flat a little moor to the west and we instantly see a tailing permit on the crown of the flat. drew makes a great cast and we are 2/3 the way to the coveted key west flats slam. I head towards the atlantic where i have been catching bonefish and the first flat does not produce but the second does, minutes after i start polling i notice discolored water a sigh of a large number of bonefish. when i find the school it is a large number and i have drew over cast and reel up on the bones, the rod bends over and there is the slam.
