Well we had quite a week of temperature fluctuations. We experienced a 60 degree swing, -30 degrees last weekend and 31 above today, Sunday, January 27, 2008. Most of the focus is now on walleyes, as pike have moved out of the shallows for the most part.

The walleye and its related species seem to favor either side of 30'. A couple good accessible areas at the entrance to Ash River from Kabetogama. The deep structures out from Lost Lake and reef edges in the 30' range.

Winter weather dominates the scene and is still making life difficult for anglers and spearing enthusiasts alike. Many bay areas have the necessary ice to support snowmobiles with caution, however the main lake has yet to be deemed safe.

Lake ice thickness varies and as of this writing it remains unpredictable. Many bays have excess of 8” of ice where as channels and the main lake remain unsafe with 2-4” of ice. The National Park Service will check ice thickness early next week.

Fall fishing on Kabetogama and Namakan has been the best I've seen in the last 5 years. Walleyes have been consistently hitting minnows at the 35-40' range for the past week. A shallow walleye bite remains slow.
