The Olson's "Venecian Holiday"

Perry and Denise Olson were ready to escape the ice in Wyoming, so they planned a week long trip to Venice to wait for their lake to thaw.

Both being avid anglers, they spoke at length with me on the phone before deciding Venice was the place for them, and I would be the person to plan their perfect fishing vacation.

On Monday, they arrived at Clara's Shady Hideaway, and settled into their comfortable "home" for the next 6 days.

I scheduled their inshore trip with Capt. Brandon Carter, one of the top speckled trout guides in the area. After some brief instruction on the use of the Old Bayside Paradise Popper X-Treme, Brandon got on the trolling motor to move the boat towards "the spot". When he turned around, they were BOTH hooked up!

Perry and Denise went on to catch their limit of 50 speckled trout at that first stop, then Brandon pulled the anchor and headed for some redfish action.

The stars must have been aligned, as the redfish were stacked up on the grassy point that Brandon selected. With the wind pushing the tide against the bank, it didn't take long for the Olsons to add their limit of 10 redfish to the fishbox.

Perry was especially thrilled to see the different coloration and markings of the redfish. Some were bronze, others lighter and all had different spots. Sometimes we locals take this for granted, but these are truly beautiful fish.

After catching their limts, the Olsons were thinking their day was over, when Brandon said, "You're not done yet...lets go catch and release some bigger reds!"

With many bruiser redfish stripping drag and totally wearing out their arms, the crew threw in the towel headed back to Venice Marina where Brandon cleaned and bagged their catch, and the Olsons enjoyed a late lunch at "Crawgators Grill" upstairs.

They spent the rremainder of their week exploring Venice and the lower Parish and enjoyed our slow pace of life here.

The speckled trout action has kicked off early this year due in part to high salinities and the above average temperatures. If you want to get in on the action, better give me a call and get a date scheduled, as many of the top captains are booked until June!
