SALMON RIVER PULASKI NY DRIFT BOAT GUIDE FISHING REPORT: Sept. 25-2012
We continue to see mostly King and Coho Salmon (few Steelhead and Brown's) entering the river daily. Fish are top to bottom of river.

Normally, for the next couple weeks you'll have as many anglers down river as up. Now that ALL these fish have spread out.
Starting the second week of Oct. you'll start to see a few more anglers mid-to upper river. Normally, more fish.
After Columbus day we normally see a few less anglers over-all.
Go for a lil walk above and or below the crowded area's and you'll be happily surprised at the number of fish you can see, fish too and catch.

You can find a lot of fish in the larger pools. But normally, at this time of year, tons of angler's too. Some anglers get turned off by this. These fish are not flown in by a helicopter in a big net and dropped into these larger pools (Har-har) They have to run the river to get there. They stop here and there along the way to rest. These are some of the prime places to fish. Lot's of time, all by yourself. These fish are like us when running up the river. They need to stop and rest along the way.
If you or I were to use the stairs leading up to the top of the Empire State building or climb a mountain, you can be sure that we would stop along the way to take a lil break. The fish are no different.
Today's Tip: Go for a lil walk, search out these other optional optimal resting, holding transitional spots. You'll be glad you did!

We presently have fish in transition and also holding. Few starting to move to that special rock.
All Habitat's are producing. All presentational tech. working. Some much more productive then other's. Care to learn?.
Spey, Float, Fly or Spin Rod's - Bait, Imitations or Flies.
Still many - many - many more Thousands of fish to run all Fall, Winter into Spring!

Lil early to target Browns and Steelhead. Normally, starting the early-mid part of Oct. we see good numbers of Steelhead down low in the river, running up.
The Steelhead enter the river to fat'n up and eat the Salmon and Brown Trout eggs that are being laid. Many of these Steelhead will stay in the river until they spawn around April. Many more steelhead will arrive all Fall, Winter into early Spring. These are the fish we target from Nov. until May. The Brown's are also entering to eat these Salmon egg's and prepare to spawn in Nov.
I've guided to some reeeel good number's of Chrome (freshies) down low in the river during Oct.
Nov.1 is when I really start to officially target Steelhead and Brown Trout, all Winter until the end of April, early May.
Nov. 1 is when you will find'm spread out, top to bottom of the river. Just like the Salmon are now.

2nd Tip for the day: (This has NEVER been published) See the rock's out of the water over Stan's right shoulder? We call those Flinestone chairs. I build them to be able to sit down and be close to the action. Any place you see these chair's would be a good - guaranteed place to fish. Why would anyone take the time or energy to build them in a bad spot? Some of us have been known to kick them over at day's end so as not to give away a prime spot. (Sneaky lil devils aren't we)

Hello Guys!
A few years ago I was fly-fishing the Salmon River in Pulaski, NY with Geir Sivertzen and Bob Funk. We had a tremendous day catching 50 of the 85 salmon and trout that we hooked. It was truly the fishing outing of a lifetime. The river was filled with fresh lake-run Chinook and Coho salmon, brown trout and steelhead.

I was fishing with 8 pound tippet when I hooked into the Coho salmon of a life time. After a 25 minute battle, I managed to grab its tail as our guide Randy Jones, was busy chasing fish that Bob and Geir were fighting. My Coho salmon measured 35 inches (88.9 cm) and weighed 22 pounds (9.98 kg). After weighing and measuring it, I quickly released it back into the river. It was by far the largest Coho Salmon I had ever landed in nearly 20 years of fishing for them. The next day, I looked at the International Game Fish Association, IGFA, Record Book and saw that the 8 pound tippet class Fly Rod record was 19lb 9oz. My fish beat the World Record by well over 2 pounds. I felt sick, because I did not go through all the necessary steps to register the fish as a record. So, the old record stands, but we all know that I beat it.

The fish was caught on one of my special flies I came up with, called Jeff's Coho Candy. It is tied on a Mustad 80500BL size 10. Recently I have started tying the same fly on a Partridge SINGLE SALMON SALAR BLACK in size 9 as well. On the left, you can see me holding the "would-have-been-a-record" Coho. From now on I'll carry a copy of the IGFA Record Book in the back of my fishing vest.
