Mosquito lagoon,New smyrna Beach and Daytona Beach Fishing Report.

It ha been a very hot summer here in Central East FL with average temps in the mid 90's but it seems as though there might be some relief around the corner. We still have some areas in Mosquito lagoon affected by the algae bloom but seems to have cleared up through out spots of the lagoon. There has been large schools of mullet through out New Smyrna and Mosquito Lagoon holding on the flats and in the creeks. Look for game fish like trout, redfish, jacks , tarpon and flounder to be mixed inane around these bait pods. This is a great time to throw plugs, soft plastics and my personal favorite Aqua Dream spoons on the edge of the large bait pods. From early morning to mid day look for the redfish to be tailing on the shallow grass flats in the Mosquito lagoon and also on top of the oyster bars through out the New Smyrna Beach area. The trout will not be far from the bait pods and can be seen popping mullet from the surface time to time.I like to throw a topwater plug early and then move to a twitch bait later in the day as they move to the deeper edges of the flats. For the shallow tailing red fish I like to use a soft plastic rigged weedless there are many to choose from but a little shad pattern or shrimp pattern has been working well. The only bad thing is the pinfish and puffer fish will wreak havoc on your tackle supply. We also still have good numbers of tarpon holding around the bridges of Daytona and New Smyrna Beach along with through out the Lagoon system. they can be tricked on several different baits from finger mullet, pin fish, and many different artificials. We also have large schools of over slot breeder redfish through out the Mosquito Lagoon and Indian River Lagoon this time of year. The snook bite has been very good as well with slot fish coming boat side frequently. Look for structure, moving water and bait and that should put you in the snook bite. I like to throw several different baits from plugs to live bait and soft plastics when they turn on it makes for a great time.

Good luck and be safe!
