Spring Mahi-Mahi run has started! Someone turned the key and the bite was hot the first week in April. Lots of gaffer fish where caught in the Miami area ranging from small schoolies to gaffer fish up to 50lbs. There was a report of a 70lb fish caught near Islamorada. The fish have been caught either underneath Frigate Birds or while trolling rigged ballyhoo near sargasso or floatsum. Fish haave been caught in as little as 100 feet and as far out to 20+ miles offshore. The bite did die down the 2nd week in April when the winds shifted to the west, prior to a late season cold front. But as of today the bite seems to have been picking up again. There has been a late push of Sailfish. There where numrous Sails caught the week of the 6th with some Captains reporting up to 20 shots a trip. Blackfin Tuna have started to show up. The tunas are typically boat shy and lines either need to be out up to 100 yards out from the boat. Lots uf chum either utilizing live bait or block chum should get the tunas biting..
