Automatic Fish Spring Hook Trap Gaff Harness Texas TX For Sale

These nifty, classic, old mechanical spring/lever gaff hooks are really unique and unusual in operation.  This is the medium size of 3 sizes offered. It is a John E. Howell patent gaff hook granted August 21, 1928.  Howell was from Dallas TX.  This same model of hook is illustrated and discussed on page 145 of Jeff Kieny's book "Patented Hooks, Harnesses & Bait-Holders - Identification and Value Guide with Collections."

It is fished vertically as shown.  A short rubber band is hooked between the top clip near the line tie and the loop on the small bait-hook which slides on the shank.  This bait hook is suspended on the shank well above the large quad hook.  When a fish strikes and the angler sets the hook, the shank slides upward and the large gaff hook snags the fish on the underside of the mouth/head.
