SONY CRF-330K Shortwave Radio For Sale

SONY CRF-330K Shortwave Radio
Current Bid: $ 992.09

The SONY CRF 330K was introduced at the end of the 1970's at a time when many of the leading Japanese electronics manufacturers were seemingly trying to out-do each other in producing superlative equipment. Some mega-sensational designs appeared at that time and this receiver falls into that category.Described as a "Shortwave Synthesized Dual Conversion Receiver" and priced at nearly $2500 in 1978, (figure that out in today's money) it was squarely aimed at the very high end of the market.  Little wonder then, that they are now considered highly collectible and are so keenly sought after.

Up for your consideration is one that used to belong to the father of one of my friends.  I believe it had not been used for quite a long time before I acquired it recently.  I tested the unit and found

I can easily locate stations on both FM and AM.  The background lights for both FM and AM dials are on when either FM or AM is selected. Digital frequency readout working on all sections of SW.  Shortwave tuner works smoothly over all its travel; there is no spot where I feel tight.  However the LED for the middle digit is faulty (i.e it shows "8" as "9") the other four digits are fine. Cassette player works.  It plays tapes in stable and correct speed; FW, REW, and RECORD functions work. SW and LW are all static.  I tested SW and LW using my SONY ICF-7601 and ICF-4900 and I got all static as well when testing SW and LW All controls are original and work smoothly.  Clock works Front panel in nice condition. Battery compartment is clean and is free of corrosion. The front protective panel is in excellent condition.

There are several points to note

The right antenna is missing its top; both antenna are in very nice condition otherwise. Sometimes when FM is selected the volume is low and I need to turn the volume to its maximum.  Sometimes it just works fine. The sound the cassette deck produces could be better.  I tried cleaning the head but achieved little improvement.  I suggest the buyer demagnize the head using a head demagnetizer (which I don't have).  Sometimes when playing cassette tapes it produces a very loud background noise that makes the music less legible.  Sometimes it just works fine. The Battery Indicator VU meters stucks and won't go back to its original position when I turn off the radio.

What comes with the radio is its original power cord but nothing else.
