NOTE:

After researching this watch I discovered that it is identical to the BREITLING 3 Register PREMIER and actually was made by Breitling and imported to the USA under the name CLEBAR.

The case reference number, 788, is the Breitling case number for the Premier. Serial number on back (595361) is a Breitling serial number. The watch utilizes the same VENUS 178 caliber as most of the 3 register Breitling chronograph watches, including Navitimer, Top Time, AVI, Co-Pilot, Premier. The VENUS 178 was Breitling's workhorse movement (Navitimer, etc), comparable to the Valjoux 72 and the Omega 321. This movement was the VENUS top of the line! It was primarily used by Breitling beginning in the 1940s and throughout the Fifties and Sixties. It is rare for other manufacturers to use it and the examples seen tend to be from the Forties (Benrus Sky Chief), CLEBAR, and from the end of the Sixties (Universal Geneve Aero Compax).

HISTORY:

Meyers' Horological Trademark Index (2004) tells us that "Clebar" was first used by Edward Trauner Inc., New York, 21 September 1925 and was registered as a trademark 9 June 1955. He also notes that "Sea Skate" was registered by Trauner in 1960, and that was an alternate name for a Zodiac Sea Wolf.

Separately, he has an entry for Clebar Watch Co., New York, which used the "Clebar" mark since 21 September 1925, but registered it 21 January 1948.

Pritchard lists the Clebar Watch Co., New York as an importer doing business in 1955 - stop watches, chronographs, time study watches, yacht timers, and watches with subsidiary seconds.

In her entry for Zodiac S.A. (reproduced at www.vintagezodiacs.com), she has a few notes on Trauner: "A 1955 ad from the ZODIAC WATCH AGENCY, New York (a division of Edward Trauner Inc.) . . ."The lash up is most likely in 1955, when Ariste Calame died and Trauner registered "Clebar."

I'm inclined to think that Trauner/Clebar was an importer of Breitling in the mid-1940s, pre-Breitling of America days, just like Horowitz/Mervos, Sickles/Belmar, and Weissman/Welsbro. Presumably, Trauner/Clebar later had a tie-up with Zodiac like Wakmann did with Breitling.

This classic-styled chronograph is triple signed CLEBAR (Case, Movement, Dial). It is an early example of a round pusher, screw back chronograph.

Case measures a large 36.25mm diameter (excluding winding crown), 44mm long and 13mm thick. Case is classic design and features a multi-stepped bezel and angled, beveled lugs.

Screw Back shows age pitting and is stamped on outside: WATERPROOF, SHOCK PROTECTED, ANTIMAGNETIC, 595361 (BREITLING serial number, dating watch to early 1940s), 788 (BREITLING case reference number). Inside case back features an engine-turned swirl pattern upon which is stamped: CLEBAR WATCH Co., SWISS, STAINLESS STEEL.

Dial is Absolutely Original and very good. Shows a nice, moderate age patina and some drop off of the original hand-applied luminous arabic numbers. Silver color, it features intricate outer chronograph chapter and inner chapter delineated into 1/5 seconds increments. Three sunken registers (constant seconds, 30 minute counter and 12 hour counter) with scored concentric circles.

Signed: CLEBAR, SHOCK PROTECTED and SWISS MADE at very bottom under 6 position. Hands are original, show corrosion and retains some of the original luminous, mostly on minute hand.

Movement: Lever movement, stem wind, seconds bit with second hand, column wheel chronograph with carrying arm, 1/5 second, 30-minute register and hour counter. Diameter 31mm, 18.000 BPH, 17 jewels, Incabloc shock protection, Breguet hairspring.

High Grade Manual Wind VENUS 178, Nickel, Gold Screw Balance, Crown Wheel. Signed: CLEBAR WATCH CO., SWISS, 17 SEVENTEEN JEWELS, UNADJUSTED, KXF (Swiss factory code for Clebar) stamped on balance bridge.

Fitted to the watch is a new, quality deBeer EUROPA Alligator Grain Handcrafted strap, black, 18mm.

NOTE: Vintage watches are never guaranteed for waterproof. Never immerse a vintage watch in water even though the watch may say ?water proof?.
