Bon Chovy, Vancouver Saltwater Report. April 5/12

April is the time of year where Vancouver area waters start to really come alive with anglers and chinook salmon! The Easter Long Weekend typically signifies the start of the South Bowen Island Chinook Fishery! The offshore waters of Bowen Island sustains one of the better fisheries of the year in local waters between the beginning of April and the latter part of May. It is not a really challenging fishery as there is no real structure or "hotspots". The fish are scattered from Vancouver Harbour out into Georgia Strait and into Cape Roger Curtis and Cowan Point. The key is to cover ground and if you hit a fish or two, work that area until you no longer get any hits. Anchovies will start to play a bigger role in local fishing now that the years first plankton bloom has hit. Having said that, green glow spoons and hootchies are also very effective. On the ebbing tide areas to focus are offshore a few miles of Cowan Point and Cape Roger Curtis. On the flood tide the outer reaches of Vancouver Harbour can be quite productive. Productive depths seem to be from 70-150 feet on the downriggers. It is always a good idea to stagger your lines as these fish are suspended and moving around quite a bit.

Crabbing has been very good in Vancouver Harbour!! Prawning has also been solid in Howe Sound!

The Gulf Islands have been pretty quiet as of late with only a few good reports so far this spring. This will all change in the couple weeks. The Gulf Islands really can't be beat for chinook salmon in May and June!

The last 10 days have been pretty slow overall. We have had a few nice fish back to the dock, but it has been a bit of a grind to get a few hook ups each trip. However, yesterday and today showed some very encouraging signs with some bigger fish up to 21 pounds hooked in local waters. It is looking like the local South Bowen Fishery is going to perk up right on schedule.

Bon Chovy has purchased a new boat for the 2012 season, a 30 foot Grady White Marlin. This boat is the largest boat in its class in Vancouver and is an amazing fishing boat! It has all the bells and whistles including a stand up head and heat! In addition to new boat.... we added a second great location......Granville Island! So, we now have two of Vancouver's most convenient locations, Coal Harbour and Granville Island!

Give us a call if you would like to book a charter or a Bowen Island overnight fishing trip! We have some great packages available! April and May are great months for overnights! http://bonchovy.com/package.php
