Quincy's Harvey Club Club takes disabled vets fishing Charles Walker carries Vietnamese shrapnel in his left leg, but he can still jump. "Man, is he ugly," he said, leaping up to pull in a bottom-feeding skate from the green Boston Harbor water. Walker threw the undesirable fish back, but he was the only man on his boat to even get a bite. "It's all right," said Walker, 60, who served two tours of duty in Vietnam. "Just to leave the grounds today was good." Walker was among nearly 200 disabled veterans from area Veterans Administration hospitals and other health facilities who gathered at the Quincy Yacht Club on Tuesday for a couple of hours of fishing and companionship during the Harvey's Salt Water Fishing Club's annual fishing trip for veterans. Milling around the yacht club before shove-off, some veterans used wheelchairs or canes, while others carried their war wounds on the inside. Tony Gideika, 26, fought in Iraq from 2004 to 2005. Physically whole, he came to fish from a six-week alcohol and substance abuse program at the Boston VA Medical Center. Gideika said he thinks the trauma of war contributed to the addiction. "I saw the worst of what war has to offer," he said. "But this is a great day to relax. It's nice to be out here. "All these fishermen are taking time out of their day to do this," he added. The veterans went out in 18 lobster boats captained by members of the Boston Harbor Lobstermen's Association. The skipper of Gideika's boat, Kevin Ferrent of Quincy, said he gives up a day's work on his lobster boat to go fishing with the veterans. That day would normally gross him about $1,500. "You couldn't put a price on this," Ferrent said. "It pales in comparison." Unfortunately, for event organizers, the fishing trip does have a price, and it exceeds this year's donations. Sam Miceli, of Harvey's Salt Water Fishing Club, said the event costs about $7,000, but donations only total $3,000. But he is not discouraged yet. "We usually luck out," he said. "It always comes through." The veterans' fishing trip has a half-century history on Houghs Neck. It started informally in 1951, when local fishermen lent their boats for veterans to go fishing. Miceli said in past years veterans have returned to their hospitals with trophies of flounder and striped bass. But the fishing was poor Tuesday. Lines on Walker's boat yielded only a skate and a battered sand crab tangled in seaweed. So Ferrent gave the order for his guests to pull in their hand lines and took them on a tour of his lobster traps. Rick Murphy, 48, an Army vet who is also in the substance abuse program, served as an ad-hoc stern man, leaning over the rail to pull in a line. "You're a natural," said Ferrent. Murphy smiled. "It's just amazing how many people support us," he said. Views: 935 Rating:
