Fraser Valley Trout Hatchery's Family Fishing Day
The Fraser Valley Trout Hatchery in Abbotsford hosted its annual family fishing day on Saturday June 14th, 2008. Trout fishing was available from 8am to noon. There were two permanent fishing ponds that were stocked with over 1000 rainbow trout for anglers of all ages to catch. A smaller inflatable pool was also reserved for kids under the age of seven to guarantee success. The Fraser Valley Trout Hatchery is one of five hatcheries that are operated by the Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC. The society is responsible for producing 10 million trout and char per year that are released into thousands of lakes across British Columbia, Canada. The hatchery also serves as a visitor centre, where the general public can learn more about fishing and trout biology. Since 2006, its Learn to Fish program is offered to all age groups during the summer. Fishing with Rod: Steelheading in Chilliwack
We are back in British Columbia Canada once again and after several weeks of severely cold winter weather in Denmark, we are eager to wet a line. Winter in the Lower Mainland means steelhead fishing and the most popular place to do so is the Chilliwack River in the Fraser Valley. In this video blog, Rod follows seasoned Chilliwack anglers Chris Gadsden so he can learn a thing or two about winter steelheading in the Chilliwack River. Chris talks about where anglers should look for when searching for steelhead, what the broodstock capturing program is and how the season has been so far in 2010. Fishing bloopers: How to lose a bell
A bell is often attached to the fishing rod when barfishing so anglers are alerted when a fish is on. Quite often, the bell would fall off the rod when the rod is picked up, so many choose to tie a float or spin-n-glow to the bell so it can be found when it is submerged. In this video, Fraser Valley resident and angler Chris Gadsden demonstrates this method, but fails to check if the bell is tied properly onto the line. Another for the blooper archive! Chaos at the hatchery
The incident took place at the Fraser Valley Trout Hatchery during its 2006 Open House on Saturday November 25th. Chaos broke out when single eggs were thought to be the fast track ticket on rainbow trout. This is the newly built trout pond at the hatchery, which is designed to cater the learn to fish program that the Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC is currently promoting. This is a clip of our December 2006's video "Another Day at the Hatchery". Launch of "Fishing in the City"
April 12th, 2008 news release by the Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC: VANCOUVER -- Lower Mainland residents will be able to enjoy three unique urban fishing opportunities this spring and summer thanks to the Freshwater Fisheries Society of bc's new Fishing in the City program. "We know that sometimes it's difficult to get out of the city to go fishing, so this year we're bringing enhanced fishing opportunities into the city," said FFSBC Vice-President Brian Chan. As part of the Fishing in the City program, the FFSBC will be conducting enhanced trout stocking activities at Rice Lake in North Vancouver and Lafarge and Como lakes in Coquitlam. These repeated stocking activities will ensure that the three lakes offer excellent fishing opportunities for shore-based anglers throughout the spring and early summer, and again in the fall. Working in partnership with local governments, the FFSBC will also erect special on-site signage providing additional information to anglers. "While the society stocks dozens of lakes across the Lower Mainland, we hope that these three lakes will offer new fishing opportunities for young and novice anglers or those who want to get back into the sport" said program coordinator Stacy Webb. "Children under the age of 16 can fish for free, and we've even reserved fishing at Como Lake for children and seniors." Adults can purchase a freshwater licence at their local tackle shop or buy one on-line. For fishing tips and tricks and lake stocking ...

2007 Cultus Lake Pikeminnow Derby
The 2007 Cultus Lake pikeminnow derby took place on Saturday June 16th, 2007. This annual derby is part of the All About Fishing Family Event, which is organized by the Fraser Valley Salmon Society. The goal of the derby is to generate sportfishing interest among the younger generations, as well as assisting Fisheries and Oceans Canada on their Cultus Lake sockeye salmon recovery program. Northern pikeminnow is a predatory species that prey on juvenile salmon. Due to a lack of predators, the population of northern pikeminnow in Cultus Lake has grown to the size that causes a lower return of Cultus Lake sockeye salmon. Fisheries and Oceans Canada hopes to enhance the sockeye population by reducing the northern pikeminnow population. This event is also part of the province-wide family fishing weekend, which always takes place during the father's day weekend. Many thanks to Dean Werk and Greg Larson of Great River Fishing Adventures for taking us our on their boats. If you wish to have your community event covered, please email me at info@fishingwithrod.com For more information on northern pikeminnow, please visit: www.fishingwithrod.com For more information on the Cultus Lake sockeye salmon recovery program, please visit: www-sci.pac.dfo-mpo.gc.ca For more information on the Fraser Valley Salmon Society, please visit: members.shaw.ca To see the derby report and results, please visit: www.fishingwithrod.com For more videos such as this, please visit www.fishingwithrod.com ...

Salmon Fishing on the Fraser River
Father and Daughter fish for Pink Salmon together at "pegleg" - a popular spot for the outdoor enthusiast in Chilliwack, British Columbia. Some Bottom bouncing, casting lures, and flyfishing. Even a "Double header" ! The mighty Fraser River did not dissapoint - They brought in a few humpy bucks and some nice does for the smoker. Pinks come through here up the Fraser in late summer/early fall every two years to spawn. Filmed last weekend of September.
