Take 1 Recycling in Croydon In April 2006, one month before the council elections, the then Labour council extended kerbside recycling in four wards (Addiscombe, Shirley, Waddon and Norbury) in Croydon. It was supposed to be trial. It was cynically marketed as a borough wide expansion. Additional collections for cardboard, plastics and garden waste were introduced in these wards. Arguably, Addiscombe, Waddon and Norbury were selected because they were Conservative targets. The margin between the Consevative and Labour vote was minimal in these wards. So, the ruling party improved the services in that ward to clinch those all-important votes. FOOTNOTE: After the footage was taken. The results were printed in the Croydon Guardian. Norwell boys top Scituate, 41, in Divison 2 tennis The Norwell High School boys tennis team picked up right where it left off last year. The defending Division 2 South Sectional tournament champion won its first postseason match this spring, beating Scituate yesterday in a first-round home match, 4-1. Defeating the Sailors for the third time this season pushed top-seeded Norwell's record to 17-0. The Clippers host eighth-seeded Westwood (15-2) in a quarterfinal today. Scituate, seeded 16th, ended its season at 10-7. Norwell returned five of the seven players from last year's team, including all three singles players. Mike Kramer and Andy Bogaty moved up from second doubles and were replaced by juniors Matt Breen and Geoff Pisarkiewicz. Both teams won yesterday, as did Norwell's top two singles players, Ryan Sweeney and Rob Ankner. Sweeney defeated sophomore Chris Nelson without dropping a game, 6-0, 6-0. Ankner, a junior, finished soon afterwards, defeating sophomore Mike Parker, 6-1, 6-0. Ankner improved to 17-0. The clinching point for Norwell came from Bogaty and Kramer, who defeated Ian Thomson and Andy McCourt, 6-2, 7-5, at first doubles. Thomson and McCourt came to the net often, but Bogaty and Kramer used well-placed lobs and passing shots to keep them off balance. The Sailors' lone point at third singles came from senior Craig Parker, who defeated sophomore Jay Wright, 6-2, 7-5. Wright battled cramps in his leg through the match, but couldn't keep up with Parker. He also just returned from a trip to China, so he hadn't hit a ball in two weeks. The closest match of the day came at second doubles, where Breen and Pisarkiewicz defeated Rob Lilly and Tim Mahoney, 6-4, 7-5. Jose Calderon scored all 15 of his points in the first half and Alex Mumbru and Jorge Garbajosa both tallied 12 points as the tournament hosts improved to 4-1 and passed Russia atop the group.
