Klamath River - Sept 2002 Part 3 September 22, 2008 - The Klamath mouth at Requa. Split rock was created when a young man fastened his net to a rock in the ocean, and caught so many salmon, the rock split in half. The large rock in the thumbnail is Oregos, a woman with a burden basket. The spirit of Oregos watches over the salmon runs. Her role is to see that the salmon return safely to their homes along the Klamath river. Views: 99 Rating:

Solving the Klamath Crisis: Part 1 Solving the Klamath Crisis: Keeping Farms and Fish Alive takes an in-depth look at the role dams play in the decline of Klamath River salmon and rural communities. The fishing and farming communities of the Klamath Basin are stuck in a rotating crisis whereby one year fishing is restricted and the next irrigation is curtailed. The dam owner, PacifiCorp, has not been held accountable for their impacts to the river and the rural communities that depend on it -- until now. With the relicensing of the Klamath dams, Klamath Basin communities have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to dramatically improve the health of the river by removing dams that have outlived their use. Solving the Klamath Crisis chronicles the struggle of Tribes, farmers, and fishermen who are tired of the endless court battles and rivalry, and are now working together on lasting solutions to resource issues in the Klamath Basin. Klamath Salmon Face Upstream Challenges Commecial salmon fishermen off the Pacific coast, farmers in the high desert of Oregon, and a large power company all have one thing in common. A desire to make sure that there is enough water in the Klamath River to meet their needs. With what looks like another fishing season that will be a disaster for commercial fishermen, Market to Market traveled to Oregon to examine the issues of "Whose Water Is It." http://www.iptv.org/mtom/archivedshow.cfm?ShowNumber=3330 Views: 121 Rating:

Salmon, Science and Sustainability In 2006, the commercial fishing season for salmon off the Pacific coast was cut by 90%, primarily because of a lack of fish coming from the Klamath River. The cuts cost fishing families and related businesses along the Pacific coast more than 60 million dollars causing the 2006 season to be declared a federal disaster. With fewer salmon being hooked, commercial fishermen have turned to science to help their net profit. Market to Market travels to Oregon to see how DNA research could increase salmon populations in the future. http://www.iptv.org/mtom/archivedshow.cfm?ShowNumber=3331 Views: 113 Rating:

"THE LAST RUN" - http://terravideos.blogspot.com "Ironically, as we work to save the salmon, it may turn out that the salmon save us." (Paul Schell, Mayor of Seattle) Salmon are an indicator species - their health closely tracks the health of the watershed to which they return. Salmon are also a keystone species, forming a critical link between forests and distant oceans. But most importantly, salmon are a symbolic species that allows us to understand the interconnected nature of the web of life. In Northern California, salmon populations are at 10% of their levels of one hundred years ago due to overwhelming pressures from logging, hydropower, and overfishing. This film brings into focus the plight of the salmon on the Klamath river and the future of the Yurok tribe who depend on the fish. Through science, we now fully understand the life-cycle of salmon, but how do we apply what we've learned to the everyday? Views: 1290 Rating:

Gordon Smith Should Apologize To Oregonians In 2002, U.S. Sen. Gordon Smith (R-OR) campaigned on his ability to coordinate with the White House to divert Klamath River water to farmers - a move that killed more than 70,000 salmon, countless fishing businesses and local economies and earned him an election victory. Now, with the House Natural Resources Committee holding hearings on the fish kill, Smith is silent on the issue. Smith should apologize to Oregonians for coordinating with the White House to earn votes by destroying natural resources and local economies. Go to www.StopGordonSmith.com Views: 523 Rating:
