MLPA Proposal 2XA, The Preferred Alternative
As we speak, the California Fish and Game Commission is deciding on an initiative that will shut down huge portions of the California coast to recreational fishing. This initiative is known as the Marine Life Protection Act (MLPA). Funded largely by the Packard Foundation (of Hewlett-Packard, and founders of the Monterey Bay Aquarium), MLPA Proposal 4 aims to keep the little people (recreational fishermen and small commercial) off the water, while allowing offshore factory ships to continue trawling, long-lining, and gillnetting. Meanwhile, an alternate draft, Proposal 2XA, has been written up by fishermen and level-headed conservationists. This Proposal protects large areas of the coast, but also leaves open important stretches of shoreline that allow safe and dependable access for boats and divers. This video was shot at the Blue Ribbon Task Force meetings in San Rafael, California on April 23, 2008. To support Proposal 2XA, please visit www.coastsidefishingclub.com for more information.

Orphaned Sea Otter Pup
Abby, a California sea otter pup, is cared for by Mark Bressler, senior animal care specialist at seaworld San Diego. The Santa Barbara Marine Mammal Center found the otter stranded and near comatose on Jalama Beach, north of Santa Barbara, Calif., on July 21 and brought it to seaworld for rehabilitation. The female pup, which was estimated to be less than a week old when rescued, is being bottle-fed around the clock at seaworld and weighs approximately four pounds. When the young otter was rescued, she was dehydrated, hypoglycemic, having difficulty maintaining her body temperature and weighed about three pounds (sea otter pups weigh between three and five pounds at birth). At first, the otter was too weak to nurse and had to be tube-fed. Animal care specialists eventually were able to get her to drink from a bottle. The otter pup is showing signs of progress, including nursing from a bottle regularly, and maintaining a normal body temperature of 99 to 100 degrees F. The California sea otter is listed as a threatened species by US Fish & Wildlife Service. Threats include oil spills, entanglement in fishing nets and disease. The three California sea otters now on display at seaworld's Rocky Point Preserve were originally stranded and rescued as part of the Monterey Bay Aquarium's Sea Otter Research and Conservation (SORAC) Program. Since 1965, seaworld San Diego has rescued thousands of animals and has treated as many as 475 marine mammals in one year. seaworld has raised ...

Fisherman's wharf
at Monterey .. Fisherman's Wharf was built by the Pacific Coast Steamship Company in 1870 for the loading and unloading of passengers and goods. The wharf was also used by other commercial operations, and the city of Monterey took ownership in 1913. Fisherman's Wharf is lined with seafood restaurants ranging from casual, open-air clam bars, to formal indoor dining with views of the bay. Along with Cannery Row, Fisherman's Wharf is one of the few areas in Monterey that sells souvenirs, so the restaurants are interspersed with gift shops, jewelry stores, art galleries, and candy shops. Whale watching tours and fishing trips leave from the wharf, and sea lions often sleep on the pilings, buoys, and moored boats in the bay.

83: Inflatable Kayak, Sea Scallops, Dock Extras
theboaters.TV First up Looking for an alternative solution to a high-priced boat? How about an inflatable kayak?! According to Trevor Kugler's article on ezinearticles.com, they are amazingly durable and can be a fraction of the cost of a traditional kayak or boat! To read more on this article and about the author check out www.ezinearticles.com. Moving on: I am going to be highlighting interesting forum topics about boating in the pod casts. If you guys have boating questions that I can help with I will research it and try to answer your question. In the forum posts, Jonothan Laurie raised a few interesting points. Jonothan, you asked about catching sea scallops. You can get on your boat, search for an area with bladed grass, pull over, and go underwater and grab the scallops. According to the Monterey Bay Aquarium, you can catch scallops using a dredge. To learn more about catching sea scallops visit www.ehow.com and if you want to learn about fishing methods visit Monterey Bay Aquarium at www.mbayaq.org. Next: When you purchase a boat you've got to have a place to store it. I found some ideas at ezinearticles.com that will make your dock more comfortable and easy to manage. Albacore tuna heart still pumping after removal from fish
Strong 4 chamber heart of an albacore tuna caught 60 miles out of Santa Cruz CA, on the edge of the monterey bay national marine santuary. montereybay.noaa.gov The heart was so strong that even when you squeezed it in your hand, it continued to pump. Amazing! Hard core fishing tradition is to eat the heart if you have never caught one. Wasn't my first, but I did eat a little. Not bad. Sorry to all the animal sensitive people, but you got to eat.
