History of Michigans Largest Commercial Fishery
This "Preservation Video" documents the history of Michigan's Largest commercial fishing industry on Saginaw Bay from the 1850's to current times. Early records indicate Lower Saginaw, now known as Bay City, had the first fisheries. The fishing industry also developed at Bay Port, Essexville, East Tawas, Au Sable, Caseville, Oscoda, and Sebewaing. This 150 year visual history includes archival photos and rare film footage from fisheries around Saginaw Bay. Two years of research and first hand interviews gives proof Saginaw Bay was the worlds largest freshwater fishery and is still a viable fishery. Bay Port Michigan History 1847 to 1857
"History & Pioneers of Bay Port 1847-1957" explains how it became the largest freshwater fishing port in the world. For years, they caught perch, sturgeon, herring and lake trout. The railroad, owned by Mr. Crapo of Saginaw, built a large grand hotel, which brought thousands of tourists to the town.
