The Solomons after the tsunami On April 2nd 2007, the Solomon Islands were hit by an earthquake measuring 8.1 on the Richter Scale, followed by a tsunami. 52 people died and at least 4000 homes were destroyed or badly damaged. Some of the worst damage was on the island of Ghizo, in the northwest, two hours flying time from Honiara. Fishing villages were wiped out, and thousands of people remain in temporary shelters, four months later. Sky's John Gatfield travelled to the Solomon Islands in conjunction with UNICEF, and has just returned from Ghizo with this special report on how the people there are coping with the disaster.
