Swordfish, sailfish, kingfish, mahi-mahi, and tuna take your pick. The fall mullet runs signal the start of some of the best fishing months that Florida has to offer. The fishing has picked up in the past couple of weeks. Although I did better last summer on the sailfish we have started to catch some as they are being pushed south by the cold fronts to the north of us. Saturday on a half day trip we were able to find a couple sails.

In addition to those sails we added a couple of kingfish. We also managed to lose a couple of kings and had a good size fish bite through wire leader after fighting the fish for several minutes. All of our kingfish ate goggle eyes on a breakaway sinker. And in addition to those fish we added a tuna to cap off the day. Bait has not been an issue as there is plenty of bait in the Miami area in the typical spots such as Bug Light, Bent Range and Government Cut.

The night fishing is also been good to excellent as we continue on very good swordfish bite. On That note, I would like to take a second to congratulate my friend Joe McGivern who caught a 400# swordfish a couple of nights ago, truly a great catch. There is always a chance that you could hook into a fish this size on any given night just off the coast of Miami. The scary thought is that we are not even in the prime sword fishing time of the year and they are still catching fish 400# fish.

So there you have it folks. The fishing should only get better as the year moves on. Give me a call and let's go fishing. We have already started to book into February so don't wait to long. Soon the tarpon will be off the beaches and our "season" will be in full swing.

Best of Luck…

Capt. Gil Gutierrez
