Let me first start off by apologizing for the tardiness of my reports I have been busy this month and got caught off guard by how fast the time went since my last report. That being said it's hot on the water both literally and figuratively. The summer heat is upon us and the transition into the summer fishery has started. We have been having good success on the "Lucky Vee". We have caught swordfish, kingfish, blackfin tuna, wahoo, tarpon, and bonitos, bonitos, bonitos. The biggest problem we have had has been the afternoon thunderstorms. On several occasions we have had to leave the water early and seek shelter to then resume fishing once the storm has passed. This is one reason that I do two things this time of year. First I start early and usually do only half days that way the day is not to hot. The other thing I do is adjust my rates. If we only fish a half day due to weather concerns, instead of a full day then that is what I will charge you for. If we are lucky and can fish more than that then I charge accordingly. I hope this clarifies things because I am usually asked about the weather this time of year and I think this is a fair policy for everyone involved.
Now that we got that out of the way lets get to the fishing. We will start with the tarpon we have caught tarpon but the season is rapidly coming to a close. The fish are still on the beaches and in the bay. Again we don't have much time as their seasonal migration could start at any time so if you want to catch one give me a call before it's to late.
We have caught sailfish but as we head into the summer we don't tend to see the numbers we see during the winter months due to water temperature, bait migration, and species migration. Of course that being said we caught two yesterday and saw 2 more in a 4 hour trip. I guess that is why you go fishing because you just never know.
What are here are the bonitos and lots of them. If you want to take your kids fishing or if you just simply want to catch a fish this is the time of year. Calm seas and abundant bonitos will have you running all over the boat. Multiple hook ups are usually the case.
The sword fishing is improving and summer is one of the best times to do it. The seas are clam and the nights are cool. We actually caught a small swordfish in 165' of water on a bottom rod. This happened shortly after a fellow captain called me and said that he had seen an estimated 150# fish jumping off his bow.
The kingfish are also starting to move in. We have caught some and have been cut off by a few others while fishing so look for that to continue to improve.
And yes the mahi are here. The only negative thing is that you have to catch several fish to find a couple of keepers but they are there. So there you have it the summer fishing is in full swing and we are catching fish and most importantly having a good time while doing it.
