Well I hasve been pre-fishing for upcomming tournaments on Sam Rayburn and Cedar Creek the last 2 weeks. Lake Fairfield has been closed due to a final deer hunt that ran from December 31st to January 5th.
I was on Lake Fairfield today and besides the strong wind blowing it was an awesome day. The Lake has come up about a foot making the ramp a little better but still a litle tricky.
Water temps were in the low 60\\\'s on most of the Lake. The cold front moved Bass close to cover. The rule was quality rather than numbers today with the wacky rigged Nichols salty mother sinker in Green pumpkin pepper was hot when fished near the reeds and caught Bass up to 4 lbs.
Carolina rigged Nichols creature baits in Watermelon Red and Watermelon Candy caught Bass as well. The Carolina rig fish in the deeper bends off points on Main Lake produced good Bass.
Biggest Bass today were caught in 4 1/2 feet to 6 feet of water on Nichols Junebug 1/2 impact Jigs fished with a Nichols Texas Craw in Junebug for the trailers. You had to work for those bigger Basss and work those jigs slowly but when you got bit the Bass were over 4 lbers. up to 5.5 lbers.
About 2:00 Pm. I was fishing the Nichols Jig along real slowly when the rod was almost taken away from me the Fish took out about 20 feet of line on the drag and fought like the new Lake record. I had 50 lb. braid on so The jig held her.She surfaced it was an almost 11 lb. Redfish. I never thought the reds there would hit jigs but I found out today they sure will. I released Her to fight again another day.
I guess you can tell I fish alot of Mr. Nichols baits. I have never seen another bait come close to His baits and when He came into my life it was the best thing that ever happened to my Bass catching ratio. Probably could have caught alot of Redfish today on the carolina rig but I got on that Jig and stayed with it from 11:30 on.
