Miami Fishing Report
Here is a quick report about a couple of trips we did.
I fished this Friday with a couple of guys from New York who were here for a wedding and man will they never forget the fishing. We fished a ¾ day and we had non stop action from the moment that we put the lines in the water. We missed our first bite which turned out to be a kingfish on the far bait. Just a short time later we added our first mahi-mahi to the fish box. A couple of minutes after that one of the guys says "hey look at that shark" and as I glanced over my shoulder I see a large cobia eating out of our chum bag. As I ran to go get bait we lost sight of the cobia but never fear because just a couple of yards behind our boat was a log and there was my friend the cobia. We calmly threw a bait to him which he obliged by eating and the fight was on. A couple of minutes later we would be introducing a decent cobia, in the 30# range, to the preexisting mahi-mahi already in the box. This is the kind of tone that our day would take on. Every couple of minutes something would swim by and the fight would be on. We would end up adding four more mahi-mahi and a sailfish to cap off the day. Overall it was a nice day of fishing.
I fished again the next Thursday with longtime customer Mike Riddel. I had a feeling it would be one of those days and it would turn out to be just that. As I was putting my second bait in the water I told Mike to keep an eye on the baits. Two seconds later I hear Mike say that we have a sail on and he was correct. After fighting that sail and getting him released we set out the baits again. We would not have to wait long, maybe all of about 10 minutes and we had another sailfish on. As Mike was fighting that fish I was hesitant about putting out another bait since we only had one angler but I went ahead and did it anyway. I'm sure you can guess what happened next we got another sail on. At that point I just put the rod in the holder and told Mike when he was done with number 2 that number 3 was waiting in the rod holder. We would go on to add another sail going 4/4 on sails. But that was not the end of our day. We then went tarpon fishing where I believe we foul hooked a tarpon but were never able to confirm this because we fought the fish for over an hour and the mono leader wore thru. I guess that was the one that got away.
The next day the anticipation was high as Robert Remin and friends joined me for a ½ day of fishing. After getting to our fishing area that was at that time empty we were covered up. Not by fish but by boats. I picked up my spread and moved away from all the boats and this turned out to be a good move. First to the party was a couple of good sized mahi-mahi. After putting 3 of those in the box we would then go on to finish the day 1/3 on the sails and 3 nice sized mahi-mahi.
That same afternoon I got to finish out the day by fun fishing with my childhood friend Chris Fuxa. Chris is going to be a dad again for the second time and wanted a couple of hours on the water before he becomes a dad this Saturday. As we were treated to a beautiful Miami sunset we caught a couple of sails, shared some laughs and called it a day as we cranked up the tunes for our ride home ending a great stretch of fishing.
This type of fishing should continue for the next 2 months. There are also reports of blackfin tuna showing up. Actually there are a lot of species here right now. Mahi-mahi, kingfish, tarpon, sailfish, and tuna. The weather is great, the boat is brand new, and the fishing is good so give me a call and let's get on the fish. Till next time
