Our water levels are high with clear ocean water pushed in the Indian River and Mosquito Lagoon after Hurricane Matthew made a close pass along our coastline. Redfishing the flats in high water means prowling shorelines as some flats have deeper water over them than reds prefer, also flats that are normally super skinny grass are a good depth of 12" to 20 " which fish like to feed in. Backwater holes, drop offs, and channels don't change as much as they are normally 5 to 15 feet deep so not that much change with higher water levels. These backcountry fish like to eat shrimp dropped along their lairs no matter the water level. Still plenty of Mangrove Snapper, Sheepshead, Seatrout, Jack Crevalle, and Ladyfish as well as some Reds, Snook, and Drum in the backcountry area here in the Indian River at Edgewater and New Smyrna Beach. Young Cole caught the big one of his family's mixed bag trip out with me recently, a good Redfish on light tackle made for an epic battle.......................

The big blow pushed loads of ocean water into the estuary and with it some fish which are normally ocean dwellers, such as Cutlassfish aka Ribbonfish caught the other day on one of my backwaters trips..................

Repeat client Sam from Orlando came just before the storm on another flats fishing adventure hunting Redfish and catching a bunch of Seatrout also on live baits, daughter Kim with a good shallow water Red..........................

Their friend Brad with a good redfish sight fished which was tailing with a small school on a lagoon grass flat................................

Dan with an over slot 30" Mosquito Lagoon Redfish caught on a live bait, we were on a drop off catching Trout, when the surprise big Red hit......................
