Venice Offshore Tuna Fishing

After trying to get offshore since February to catch some tuna, Corey Summers and his crew consisting of Jason, Keith, and Mark Rogers, R.M. Jones and Todd Rabalais headed out Friday under perfect conditions on Capt. Bill Delabar's 32-Twin Vee.

Corey's one wish was to "catch tuna" so I made sure he was with one of the best to try and fulfill his request.

After catching the right bait, they headed south and set up a drift at one of the floaters.

Since Corey had never landed a yellowfin, he had NO IDEA of their strength. I gave him fair warning..."Be careful what you wish for!"

From there I'll let Corey take over to tell you about his day:

"I want to thank you, Susan, and Capt. Bill again for a wonderful trip. We were catching fish faster than any one of the 10-12 boats that were swarming the rig, and the radio chatter was all about us."

"It felt good to be the boat everybody else was watching."

"We would set up and within minutes be hooked up. I am sure if I could have gotten my fish in a little quicker we would have had even more fish to take pictures of," Summers added.

"I did rag on the other guys before and even after I caught my fish, although it was a little more intense before that yellowfin tuna made me look like a sissy," he admitted.

After fighting a big, stubborn tuna for almost an hour, Corey was ready to call for the "satellite gaff." Capt. Bill slowly prepared his gear as he watched Summers gain line only to lose it again to the stubborn tuna.

"I am glad Capt. Bill took his time when I gave up and told him to go shoot him. At least I can save a little face now by knowing I did land him by myself," he grinned.

"We ended up with 48 gallon ziploc bags filled with tuna," said Summers.

Summers reflected on previous trips he had made across the coast:

"I have been on plenty of offshore snapper "bottom jerking" trips and never have I brought home that much meat."

"Needless to say my snapper fishing days are all but over, I am now hooked on the biguns."

"Again it was a great trip and I am greatly pleased. I am sure I will be talking with you again." said Summers.

For your chance at rumbling with a big yellowfin tuna, give me a call and I'll get you scheduled. Very few dates left in July -- only the 18, 19, 29, 30, 31st -- but some great availability in August including a couple of weekend dates. They won't last too long with catches like this so make your reservations soon!!
