Despite the late spring and colder water temperatures than usual (48-49 degrees), the walleye bite was pretty good on yesterdays opener. Me and my client Dale Dewildt had our two man 10 fish limit by 9:30. But we still wanted to keep fishing, so we played catch and release for the rest of the trip letting bigger fish go as we caught smaller but legal ones. Caught a few perch too. Had some guests staying with us do pretty good too. Pat Schiller and his wife Judy ended up with 7 keepers with Judy catching the biggest one at 25 inches (which made her day). Was nice to hear some good reports from Big Bay de Noc too. It is fished so little compared to Little Bay it is very hard to know what is going on over there. Dale and I caught the majority of our fish drifting with Lindy Rigs and floating jig-heads tipped with just half a crawler or less. We actually ended up catching 19 keepers total. The walleye are feeding heavily on wigglers now, so small presentations work best to "match the hatch" so to speak. All in all, a good start to the walleye season.
