After a great weekend of fishing and three days of the flu I am ready to give you the reports from last weekend:::::
venice:::"Strike Zone Too" had my good friend Steve Tusague's son and relatives on board for a 24hr trip. Steve at the last minute had something come up and could not make the trip but his son, Steve jr took up the slack.
We departed Cypress Cove Marina at 1:00 pm on Friday and down the river we went...Our crew was myself, Capt. Kevin Aderhold and deckhand Tyler. As we came out of South pass Capt Kevin moved to his snapper honey hold to find the snapper in a frenzy. After 20 minutes we had our limit of nice Red Snapper and pointed our bow south. After running 20 miles I heard my good friend Capt Frank Frelish on the radio talking about the best rip of the year....He was fishing the New Orleans Big Game Tournament on the vessel "Surprise" that he captains. I made a call on the radio and he came back to let me know where the rip was located...The Frelish's are family and we have worked together and helped each other for many years....As we approached the rip Capt. Kevin was in the cockpit with the rigger out and the rod and reels set on GO....after going through the large patches of grass into the blue water he had four of the seven lines in the water and ready to fish....It only took three minutes for the first Bull Dolphin to like what Capt Kevin was serving for lunch...We knew it was on...but after four hours on the rip not another fish....I pointed the boat south again in search of our home for the night. We trolled until dark as we came to the floater. Two boats were working the floater and only a few Blackfin were caught....We started our charter boat fishing tricks and found that the Blackfin were not ready to eat....At 12:30 we had five Blackfin in the box and again we went south for 7 miles to the next floater....Capt Kevin made two passes by the rig to see if he could mark any fish and again nothing....This was shaping up to be a long night....Tyler wanted to do a test chum to see if we could get a Yellowfin to bite. We need more Blackfin for our chum -but we did the test chum....after 10 chunks of Blackfin had hit the water the reel began to sing.....The Yellowfin had found the chum and most important the hook. The fight was on...Steve stepped up to the plate to fight this big Yellowfin....after 1 hour and 45 minutes we had the 146lb Yellowfin in the box....from that point on it was non stop...Yellowfin and Blackfin in the chum all night....The count was nine Yellowfin and all the Blackfin you wanted. As the sun came up Capt. Kevin had his lines out and the troll began.....we made several passes by the floater but nothing.....my next move was to troll back to the rip that we got off the night before 28 miles north. As we started north in open water we had four good strikes and lost all the fish...by the time we had reached the rip we had four Bull Dolphin in the box in open water.....The rip had moved 5 miles north over night. It was made up but not as defined as the night before.....as we fished the rip i went inside and cooked a feast with some real fresh Red Snappers....we stayed on the rip until 11:00 am and picked up and ran back to the Marina...great trip, great anglers, great weather and a lot of good filets.
On the "Stress Management", they had a day trip on Friday.....They were not as lucky. The bite was real slow....The had one 30lb Yellowfin and two Dolphin....It is hard for a group to see lots of fish on the dock and come in with only a few....TWO things::::that's fishing and that's the difference with a 24 hr trip. 24hr trips will produce more fish....at one point you will be in the feeding zone...and you will catch fish....on the trip Friday/Saturday the zone was 1:30 am on Saturday until 4:30 am and that is when we loaded the ice chest....We fished non-stop and hard for 16 hours and had 3 hrs of non-stop ACTION....
Guatemala: We only had one trip on the "Strike Zone" and they were able to catch 4 Sails, 12 Dorado's and had three Blue Marlin window shopping. We have a group of six angler from Louisiana going on June 26 to July 1.....I can't wait to see what the La boys can do''''''''Got a chance to view the TV show that rodnreel did in Guatemala...it is a must see...After watching it I was ready to get on a plane and head south....They did a great job and it looks like they had a lot of fun.....The fishing in Guatemala is unbelievable - you have to come fish Guatemala....
