July 7 Sarasota Fishing report
Anglers aboard Sarasota Fishing Charters continue to find success fishing for Tarpon, Snook, Sea Trout , Flounder , Bluefish and Spanish Mackerel. Early fishing has been best because of the numerous afternoon thunderstorms that are part of a Sarasota summer weather situation. Bay fishing has changed from a shallow water to a deep grassy areas and the passes simply because the water is too
hot . Whitebait right now is either way too big or so small that it is practically useless. The best way to achieve success in the bay is the Deadly Combo or DOAs.
Anglers Glenn and Mark Silver joined me for a fun day that included Snook, Mangrove Snapper, Bluefish, Spanish Mackerel and Sea trout. It was certainly a great time to see Father and son fishing, laughing and enjoying each other's company. The next day, James and Jim Oakes from Ontario fished with me for another mixed bag of Sarasota game fish. Both are advanced fly fishermen and had a great time with schools of Bluefish Mackerel and Ladyfish. On a threatening but safe day of some rain and lots of wind, Jimmy Macalister and girl friend Marina caught several Trout over 20 " that included Jimmy's giant 26"er. Every big fish was caught on a deadly combo. After a couple of days off due to violent rain storms and rough seas, Justin Stright and wife Jeanine from the Detroit area caught Snook to 30", Sea trout to 22", flounder and others. Finally Darren , Jessica and Noah fished with me an caught Sea trout to 18", Snapper to 18" , grouper and others . All in all, fishing in the bay is still good and should stay good for quite a while.
Tarpon have returned from their summer full moon spawn and are now single fish and smaller schools working the sand bar line along Longboat, Lido and Siesta Keys. This is my favorite time of the year to fish for Tarpon as the anglers are few and the Tarpon plentiful. The trick is to drift along the sand bar and keep a couple of baits under floats . The tarpon are scattered ,but they are hungry. Chad Allan joined me for my first July Tarpon trip this week. He had 6 Tarpon on and finally landed a 120lber.Tarpon action should continue at this pace until Mid august.
