Venice Offhsore Fishing - Murden Group

Mike Murden and the SJPSO crew headed down for the first of six dates they have scheduled with us this spring and summer. They met Capt. Bill Delabar at the dock at 5:30 a.m. and got underway shortly thereafter. As they headed out South Pass, they were met by the angry seas and slop that is sometimes present at the pass. After a quick huddle with the customers, the decision was made to go for it, so they hunkered down in my comfortable E-Sea Rider bean bags for the bumpy ride out.

The crew passed a blue water rip about 10 miles out of the pass, as they continued on to deeper water further out in the Gulf.

At the first rig, Capt. Bill retrieved the other half of the skipjack we had boated the day before. Skippys make some excellent chum for yellowfin, so hopes were high for a repeat of Saturday, when we had 8 good yellowfin tuna.

Their first drift was unsuccessful, but during the second drift they hit "yellow gold" -- with a fat yellowfin. The third drift produced twin 30-pounders, which the customers made quick work of.

The wind continued to gust and the seas were building, so the guys knew they had to make each and every drift count.

Michael said the bite stayed steady with at least one hook up every drift but no more double headers. The guys did lose one UFO fish which had inhaled a live hard tail, then bit through the leader after making a searing run on the surface...marlin or big wahoo probably...

Johnny Lamey of Mississippi brought along his friend, Doug, for his first tuna trip. As usuual, Capt. Bill did not disappoint the "tuna virgin". Doug started the day with a respectable 50-pound yellowfin tuna, followed by a 95-pounder, and then finsihed off the day with another 90-pounder. Not to shabby for someone new to the sport.

With one of the crew doing a bit of extra "chumming", the decision was made to head in with a solid box of 8 yellowfin up to 95-pounds. They stoppped and snatched one red snapper on the way back in through the delta.

As always, April can be "iffy" for tuna, but Bill has been consistently in the "kill fish mode" since his vacation to Panama. Maybe we'll send him on holiday more often, as the rest and relaxation seems to do him wonders :)

Now is the time to make reservations for those summer tuna trips and book tournament dates. The Faux Pas is coming up in July and there are billfish and other fun tournaments out of Venice all summer.

Corporate groups, bachelor (and bachelorette) parties are my specialty with no detail overlooked. I take care of everything so that YOU can enjoy YOUR day. Get a crew of six together and give me a call for a day you will long remember.
