Smith Lake

January 16, 2012

I went fishing with a friend and my son today. The water level on the lake continues to be abnormal high, as the lake was about one foot over full pool. The water clarity is different all over the lake. The main channel in most places is clear, but some areas have a lite stain. Goat island on the other hand is dirty, the water looked better today then yesterday. As for the fishing it was tuff today, we covered a lot of water only to find scattered fish. We spent most of the day trolling umbrella rig and different lures on the down riggers. While we were trolling umbrella rigs, I let out an "Alabama Rig" that I was going to hook to the down rigger. While I was hooking the line to the clip, I felt the line tighten and it started jerking. I thought about hand lining it in, but with all the other lines out I decided to use the rod and reel. I've been catching a good amount of stripers while using the Alabama rig with 3/4 oz. and 1oz. swimbait jigheads with 5" to 6" swimbaits. I will be fishing everyday day except Tuesday. The ten day forecast shows weather in the 60's, 9 out of 10 days. There are several days with the possibility of rain, but as long as its not thundering & lightning. I'll be taking full advantage of more than a weeks worth of 60 degree weather, not bad for January. No cabin fever this week, so if your interested in fishing Smith Lake and want to fish when it's not 30 degrees, give me a call as this weather want last.
