April 5, 2011 Kona fishing Report.

The Kona charter fishing continues to be excellent. If you are in Kona, April and May are great time for fishing with a wide variety of big game fish in the waters of Kona, Hawaii.

Yesterday, was an awesome day for Ken Booth and his son Kyle from Wixon, Michigan. Ken has fished most of the Blue Marlin destinations but never really landed a big one. Today was a magical day. First we were in a tournament with about 21 other boats. About 11:00 am, we hooked a Blue Marlin estimated at 500 lbs. However, during the fight, a shark began circling the boat. After an hour and forty minutes we got the fish to the back of the boat....but the shark attacked the Marlin cutting our line and we lost our fish as well as the lure....and (so we thought) the tournament. We turned back toward the harbor thinking our day was over. But this is Kona and 30 minutes after losing our first fish to a shark, another huge Blue Marlin struck the short rigger lure. This one was even bigger. However, Ken had learned a lot during his fight with the first big fish and did a great job getting the fish to the boat in about 1 hour. This fish did NOT get away, weighing in at 592 lbs and won the tournament! Quite a day for Ken and his son Kyle who filmed both fights. One of the best things about doing my own web site is putting my clients photos and their fish up immediately following the charter. So here is Ken's tournament winning fish from April 2. The second photo is a Hawaii short nose Spearfish.

On March 31, Kenneth Simons from Brighton, Colorado enjoyed his first Kona fishing charter when he landed a nice striped Marlin. On our previous charter, Peter and Judy Bruce from Canada and their two sons tagged and released two Spearfish and kept a great eating Wahoo for the BBQ. The day before, Rick from Minnesota landed a nice Spearfish along with a Mahi Mahi. They also had a nice stop at Captain Cooks for some outstanding snorkeling...could barely get them back out of the water! A day earlier, Tony Polkoski from Iron River, Wisconsin landed his first billfish when he caught a nice 45 lb. Spearfish. And last week, Pete from Washington State hit a jackpot. He landed a striped Marlin, a Spearfish and a Wahoo and then just missed a Blue Marlin and a Mahi Mahi.

Kona has seen some very good Blue Marlin, striped Marlin, Spearfish and Mahi Mahi fishing this year. Also the Wahoo have shown up now and that is very good news. So, now the fishing is for a wide variety of fish, ie, Blue Marlin, Wahoo, Spearfish, striped Marlin and Mahi Mahi.

On one of our previous charters last month, Ryan and Megan McQuoid from Washington State had a nice introduction to the fishing in Kona. First they landed a great tasting Wahoo...and then hooked up about a 300 lb. Blue. It came off..but just a bit later, Ryan released a very nice 180 Blue. The day before, Jason and JoAnn Pond (and their three lovely teenage girls, Alex, Shelby and McKenzie) were on HighNoon for a second day of fishing. From Lake Oswego, Oregon, Jason's goal was a Blue Marlin and for most of the day we didn't get a bite. Then (while Jason was sitting right at the long corner rod), it went off. Jason jumped a foot off the deck as the rod scream out a bit of line....but the fish didn't stick. As I went back to tease the fish back up, it moved to the short rigger lure, slammed it down and the fight was on! It took about 400 yards on it's initial run jumping most of the time. After about 15 minutes, Jason got the fish about 20 yards from the boat, when it again erupted into the air and charging the boat. I powered away and JoAnn got some awesome video which she will be sending me. Great day that ended very well as we released a 250 Blue Marlin. Two days before, we tagged and released a nice 150 lb. Blue Marlin for John Knie and his son from Washington State.
