We are so close to the time of year that I absolutely love that I just had to let this horse out of the yard. The big bass are coming off the bed and will continue for about 6 weeks, we are real close to the first shad spawn; this all adds up to the spinner bait bite. That's right, it's time to start slow rolling those big 1 oz. spinner baits off the drops and creek edges, down the ledges and over the humps. I must warn you though, hang-on you could get your arm broke and I just can't take any responsibility for that. Your on you own now, I warned you the spinner bait bite is close enough that I just couldn't wait to tell you. The key to me to catching big fish on spinner baits is a couple of things. I believe the way you rig is most important, in order to get the most vibration out of your bait is to rig it on a medium-to-medium light tip rod. Use braided line so the give is not in the line, this allows the rod to control the action and the line to hook the fish, you'll get more vibration and a strong hook set and you catch more bass.
The next key to look for is shad chasing your spinner bait, when you see the shad following your bait you will know you're in the right place. Actually you can feel them bump the blades as you work over the fished area, if you can't see them or feel them, move on. If the shad are showing up then work the area thoroughly, remember that many times angles are very important while fishing a spinner bait. If you are not getting bites yet the shad are present then change the angle of your presentation, the bass may be positioned so they are not getting the full effect of your bait and a change in presentation angle can be all we need to trigger a strike.
Good fishing, God Bless and hold on, it is the good times!
