Bucs-Shelton Quarles with nice redfish
Bucs-Shelton Quarles with nice redfish

Redfish is my favorite fish to target, for many reasons. They are a very hard fighting fish that doesn't quit. You can find redfish in large groups, sometimes up to 1000 fish in a school. On some days they will eat anything you throw at them and on other days they can be very picky.

Baits are a very important part of catching redfish. I try to have a variety of baits during my Tampa Fishing Charters. Greenbacks, pinfish, and threadfins are my choice of baits. I will usually use live greenbacks, fishing them under a cork or free lining them. Small pinfish make a good live bait and for big pinfish cut the head and tail off and use the center section for cut bait. Threadfins are my favorite redfish bait, I use them as cut bait and redfish love it.

One of the most important things about redfishing or any type of fishing is fishing is like real estate it is all about location, location, location. You can be the best fisherman in the world but if you are fishing where there is no fish, you will catch NOTHING. So spend alot of time on the water just looking or hunting redfish. On high tides look in the mangroves, oyster bars and also on the flats. On low tides look in potholes and drop off ledges.

Now that you know where the redfish are you can go there, just go into that spot very slow and quietly. Put on a variety of baits, see what they are wanting to eat that day. Once you know what they are eating, bait everybody up with it and now it is time to have some fun
