Fishing Report for Jan. 11, 2008 for Master Baiter's Sportfishing and Tackle

Changing Seasons Bring Tourist and Fish Alike!
I was walking around Marina Vallarta the other day with some clients and told them how I believe our fishing grounds off Puerto Vallarta in my opinion were among the best in the world. I talked about how some boats were better than others when talking about Captains and First Maters. It dawned on me that if I believe these are the worlds best fishing grounds, and these are among the best boats and Captains in the Puerto Vallarta, does that mean these Captains and First Mates are among the best in the world? For day in and day out fishing, I'd have to say yes, I agree with that! Not that these captains have the most recent lures and equipment, but they are on top of the action and know these waters like "Nobody's Business". So welcome to another fishing report from Fish City, aka Puerto Vallarta.
The winter season is moving in full force with tourism and cooler water temperatures. Of course this means that the Yellowfin Tuna and Black Marlin are for the most part gone until come June. I hope this doesn't burst your fantasy bubble of boating one of these this year, but there you are. This now of course doesn't mean the fishing is bad by any stretch of the imagination, but it does mean the fish will be on the smaller side. That is if you think a sixty pound fish is small!
Corbetena and El Banco have been their usual self and if you can find the warmest water out there you can still boat a Yellowfin Tuna. I know I say they're on their way out, but there are still some 80 lb'ers out there lingering around. Cubera Snappers are still out there along with Sailfish, Rainbow Runners and Wahoo off the finger of rocks off the island. Update Jan 14: Yellowfin Tuna have started to take the bait again, but it's an early bite and you better be getting out there early. Find the warm spots and use a kite. Lures are working if you get the right combination which is changing daily. Black and purple do well always when in a pinch. At Corbetena five miles south of the rock has been working well. Same goes for El Banco, north about 80 to 15 miles will produce Yellowfin Tuna to 160 lbs in the warm spots as well as Striped and Blue Marlin. Mostly in the 150 to 250 lb range, but there! Also the area between El Banco and Corbetena have been producing once more. There's a ridge and channel in this area about at the mid mark that can produce nice Marlin and Yellowfin. This are is for the most part ignored in favor of Corbetena or El Banco with anglers familiar with the area. Well worth the fuel expense…
El Morro and points north of Punta Mita are still the hot spots for this week. If you're in the 15 to 20 mile range off the point you've got a shot at Stripped or Blue Marlin. I'd give it a 50/50 chance if you're in the market for Marlin. If not, there's plenty of Sailfish, Dorado, and Rooster fish to be had. With lots of Spinner Dolphin in the area, if you run into a field of these beautiful animals, you're more than likely to come back in with a Yellowfin Tuna. Although it will probably be under forty pounds. But hey, everything counts in large amounts! Jan 14 Update: Things are getting hot in this area. Spinners are still plentiful in the area which means lots of football sized Yellowfin. But Blue Marlin are more plentiful these last few days and are here is you've got the patience. Sailfish and Roosters have perked up as well. Lots of bait in the water and for fickle fish this can at times be a problem. Especially when it's Shrimps, Squids and small sardines.
Inside the bay is alive with fish, but don't expect to boat Moby Dick in the bay. But for those who are looking for some hot and consistent action, then this is the place to be. Smaller side fish, probably under thirty pounds like Snapper, Yellowfin Footballs, Snapper, Sierra Mackerals, Bonito, Torros, Jack Crevells and much more. So no there are no reasons to keep you off the water this week amigos!
Right now as we enter Winter, you'll probably notice from this article that the locations the local Captains are hitting now will change slightly. North of Punta Mita will become an area that will most likely be a big producer for the next four to six months. This has been the case for the last couple of years and I have no reason to think things will be any different this year. But things do change and anything is possible. This is the time fo the year that the Captains in Puerto Vallarta have their skills and abilities tested. Anyone can boat fish like in the summer where they're almost jumping in the boat. But when it's less plentiful out there, the smart captains and the Equiped Captains are the ones who are boating fish. So as the season goes on, notice how our captains will come in consistently with game fish.
I've been discussing a new product on the market that is very similar to the spray on truck bed liner products that are made of a spray on plastic type material. My friend Scott Breitag painted the bottom of his Kayak with this stuff and I have to tell you it's surprising how well it keeps barnacles and other sea life from growing on it. After more than a month of the kayak sitting in one spot for a month, we thought we'd see how things were working. We took the kayak out of the water, flipped it over and everything you'd expect to see was there. Using a simple beach towel the barnacle starts and other plant like things wiped off with a couple of strokes!
