Smith Lake

July 15, 2011

With the rain on and off for the next couple days. That should help lower the temperture and make the nights alittle more pleasurable. As that was the case for tonight. We launched out of Big bridge around 7:00. We headed toward the dam with a few stops on the way. On our first stop we hit a school of spots. For about  five minutes it was fish after fish, and just like that, it was over. With the biggest weighing 3 1/2 pounds. After that we stopped on several points and caught a few spots. By that time the sun was fading, so we changed over the gear to get ready for some stripe fishing. The stripe fishing has been slower the last few weeks. On our first spot we had no takers. So we moved to a area close to the dam that I had good luck at yesterday.  When we got to the spot my depth finder was lit up like a christmas tree. We backed off the area and they started making cast to the spot. After five minutes and several different lures Tom got his first bite.  He hooked a six pound stripe. Right after he boated his fish, Jeff hooked into one. He had a much bigger fish on and all attention went to making sure he stayed hooked up. After the first few runs I knew he had a huge fish.  The pole he was using was rigged with 12lb. test and 3" Storm Wild Eye Shad swimbait in chartues. It took 5 minutes or more before we even got to see the fish. Once we did, there faces where priceless. I am not sure they had ever seen a stripe that big.  The fish had a few more short runs left in him.  So he worked him up to the top where I got the net on him. It was a 27lb. beast, the biggest in the last three weeks. After that we picked up two more stripe out of the area and then the bite stopped.  By that time the moon was coming through the clouds and the guys really wanted to caught some crappie for their trip home. We boxed twenty nice crappie before we headed back.  If you interested in a trip on smith lake give me a call.
