Vancouver Saltwater Report, May 30, 2007

We are getting close to the time where the fishery goes into a transition period here in the local Vancouver waters. The winter and spring feeder fish will start to disperse out of the local area and the larger migratory fish will start moving in. There has been some nice sized fish taken over the last month and a half already. We are still fishing the harbour and the south side of Bowen with moderate success. We have been hooking 1-2 legal fish a morning over the last 10 days or so. Mixed in there are also a few undersize chinook to keep the rods moving. We have been finding fish between 50 and 120 feet on our riggers. Anchovies, cop cars, and green glows have all been working. The key is finding the fish. In the harbour good bets are the Bell Buoy, Jericho, the QB, and the Cap Mouth on the high slack.

The Gulf Islands have been fishing really well over the last few weeks. On every trip over to that side, except for one, we have landed multiple chinook salmon. There has been some nice sized fish as well. We managed to boat a 22 pounder last week as well as a few in the mid teens. Some real good quality. We found our larger fish around Thrasher Rock. The Grande, Whalebone, and the Waterfall have been good as well. We have been fishing deeper on that side of the Strait. We have been runing the riggers from 100-190 feet down, depending on where we are fishing and where the bait is. Coyotes, anchovies, and the splatterback hootchie have been working well. To fish the Gulf Islands a 8 hour or 10 hour charter is needed to account for the running time.

There has been the odd early coho already taken so lets hope that the coho fishery off West Van starts off strong in the third week of June!

Please call or email us for any charter info!!!
