Fishing Report for Wk of Oct. 19, 2007 for Master Baiter's Sportfishing and Tackle

It's a beautiful thing to be in the Marina in the morning hours just before the charter boats depart. The air has a crispness to it, lots of people walking around with that first cup of coffee and everyone is making final preparations for the vacationing Angler looking to catch a finned fantasy! As you head out past the cruise ships and into the bay, you can't help but think how beautiful it all is. It can be easy to take for granted the beauty Puerto Vallarta, or PV to the locals, has to offer. As the sun pops up from behind the mountains the whole area gets a golden glow and somehow you just know that today is going to be something special.

We set a heading for Punta De Mita then head east passing birds crash diving into a bait ball of Sardines or some other bait fish. But we don't stop, we're heading for The Bank or El Banco. About an hour later we reach our destination. It seems you're in the middle of nowhere, but the GPS tells us we're at the exact place we want to be. We caught some bait before hitting El Banco and they're sewn and ready to troll. For those who don't know, The Bank or El Banco is located fifty miles out from Marina Vallarta as the Sea Gull flies! It's a underwater mountain range, which is the best way I can describe it, that goes form over 600 feet deep to about 65 feet at the high spots. I generally refer to El Banco as a Marlin McDonalds since it's just off the side of the continental shelf where it takes a steep drop into the depths of the ocean. Marlin and Yellowfin Tuna follow the currents along the shelf, so stopping by El Banco is Fast Food indeed!

We drop the bait in the water and begin trolling using Skipjack Tuna, Bonito, or Mackeral. It doesn't take long before you hear the reels screaming and the Captain yells "Fish On"! This is a battle cry if I ever heard one, everyone jumps into action and the dance begins. The first mate grabs the pole and using his experience as a guide sets the hook, not too soon, and not too late. While this is happening, the anxious angler jumps in the fighting chair, the pole is put in place in the gimble and the pumped up Angler takes over from there. It's too early to know if it's a Marlin, Tuna or a boot, but it's there and we're in the game! Welcome to paradise, this is what it's all about. Easy, never… Exciting, you bet, the opportunity to participate at the pinecle of what fishing has to offer, well it's not quite priceless, but close! You'll still have to break out the cash, but you won't remember the price, just the catch!

El Banco this week has been some of the best fishing I've ever seen here in Puerto Vallarta. Of course you've got the Old Salts that will differ with this, but nobody will argue that the fish are out there. I haven't seen a Black Marlin come in under 250 lbs (including the released ones), or Yellowfin Tuna under 200 lbs. Even the Blue Marlin are averaging 250 lbs. Dorado or Mahi Mahi, Sailfish on tap and the story continues. I'm starting to sound like a broken record, I know, but when it's at it's best, that's what you sound like!

Corbetena has been hot and cold. One day you'll hit a school of Monster Yellowfin Tuna over 250 lbs, then the next day it's like a ghost town. Some days there's plenty of bait, then the next nothing! Other days plenty of bait, but the Yellowfin and Marlin ignore it for other more abundant and unknown bait fish are getting their attention. Then again, there's the day you don't see anything, drop a bait, start trolling and KaBOoM! A double hook up with a Black Marlin and a Monster Yellowfin Tuna at the same time! This will test your skill as a Captain! So I guess the bottom line on Corbetena this week is just get your butt out there and take your shot. You may have to work a little, but nothing ventured… nothing gained.

In Shore this week is like going to Rooster City. The Marietta Islands and El Morro are swarming with heards of the Quill headed beauties. Along with Dorado, Snappers, Jack Cravells and more. Great option for a shorter trip with lots of action.

Punta Mita and locations north are also bursting with large Rooster fish and Jack Cravells. I haven't mentioned much about the Jacks lately, but they've decided to come back and are available in a your secret fishing spot. They're part of the Tuna family and fight like a demon. When you boat ten of these beauties, your arms will be like spaghetti, without the sauce amigo.

Some of you may have heard about the incident on Southwest Airlines where the gentlemen was asked to remove or turn inside-out his Master Baiter TShirt? For the record, that wasn't my shirt, but it's bringing me a ton of attention with request for shirts, hats, etc. going through the roof! Well I'm getting my online store up and running as soon as possible, if you'd like to be included on my email list for the new online store, contact me (letsfish@mbsportsfishing.com) and when it's up and running I'll fire you an email!
