Kona Sport Fishing, April 2007

The fishing in Kona continues to be good for big Blue Marlin. Springtime in Kona is famous for it's large Blue Marlin along with striped marlin, Spearfish and Wahoo. April and May are two of my favorite fishing months because you never know if that next strike will be a 40 lb. Spearfish, a 20 lb. Mahi or a 800 lb. monster Blue! Yesterday, March 28 there were three charter boats who landed marlin in excess of 600 lbs. each. On March 26, HighNoon had a excellent fishing day. Just outside the harbor we had a triple Ahi strike (giant yellowfin tuna). After a 30 minute fight, we landed our first Ahi of the season about 125 lbs. Putting our lures back in the water, we had another double Ahi strike and landed another one about 100 lbs. This is a bit of a nice surprise since Ahi usually don't show up until later in the springtime. Following that, we lost one Blue Marlin and landed a nice Mahi of about 30 lbs.

Kona's first "Grander" of the year was landed earlier this month. This giant Blue Marlin weighed in at 1012 lbs. April and May is generally a good time for giant Blue Marlin. There are more Blues around during the summer, however the Blue Marlin average larger during the springtime. So it is quality vs quantity during March, April and May. Just a few days ago, HighNoon hooked up another monster Blue Marlin estimated at 800 lbs. Unfortunately, it threw the hook about 20 yards from the boat after an hour fight. Nice fish though...and an estatic angler!!

Our fishing this spring has been excellent for Blue Marlin...although the Spearfish and Mahi fishing has been a bit slower than usual. I would look for the good Blue Marlin fishing to continue and the Spearfish and Wahoo to begin their springtime runs in April. Having an occasional giant Ahi strike is a bonus since these fish usually begin biting later in the spring and summer.

A typical springtime fishing charter would be to target Wahoo for about the first 30 minutes. If the Wahoo are biting, we should catch one or two of these speedsters. Then I change over to Blue Marlin and other big game lures and troll down to a ledge where we might find some great live bait in the form of skipjack tuna. After catching one or two of these, I put them out for live bait for Marlin, Ahi and Mahi Mahi. After slow trolling these for a while, we can change back over to lures for the final runs of the day. I try to keep things interesting and fish a variety of techniques. If one method seems slow, we can change our fishing tactics. A variety of fishing techniques from trolling to live baiting are used here in Kona.

The water in Kona is generally very calm. A great place to relax, watch the beautiful scenery and sea life while waiting for that one strike that can turn a ordinary day into something to remember for a lifetime!

Kona sportfishing is not just for the experienced angler. Many of my clients have never been big game fishing before and have caught Marlin, tuna and other big game fish. I enjoy showing first time anglers how to catch giant Marlin and other Billfish. Plus, because of the calm waters and magnificent scenery including the dolphins and whales, the Kona marlin fishing experience can be enjoyed by everyone.

The ultimate big game fish, the Pacific Blue Marlin are found in the waters off Kona all year around. Also, striped Marlin, Black Marlin, Yellowfin Tuna, Wahoo and Spearfish are also here much of the year. Mahi Mahi and the smaller tuna are among the other big game fish found in the waters off Kona. A Kona sportfishing charter offers a wide variety of fishing choices for both the experienced as well as the novice angler.

Kona Fishing Charters have something to offer anglers all year around. Kona Marlin fishing is world famous and most of the world record Blue Marlin have been caught off the Kona Coast of Hawaii. Kona Marlin fishing is a it's peak during the spring and summer. Kona fishing charters also have giant yellowfin Tuna (Ahi) and striped Marlin most of the year. For the light tackle enthusiast, there is excellent fishing for Spearfish, Mahi Mahi and Wahoo. While Kona marlin fishing, we run a variety of big game lures for all types of big game fish. You never know if that next strike is going to be a 30 lb Wahoo or a 500 lb Pacific Blue Marlin!
