I just returned from a fabulous four day fishing trip to Trophy Bass Lodge on beautiful Lake Huites. The trip started upon our arrival on Wednesday May 2nd at about 3:00 in the afternoon. We decided to try our luck for a couple of hours and it proved to be worth it. My fishing partner Scott Rogers immediately hooked into a solid seven or eight pounder that came to the top and proceeded to throw the 7 inch Tsunami swim bait back in his face. This being Scott's first trip to Mexico I must have forgot to remind him you have to do everything possible to keep them down! As luck would have it the very next cast he hooked another one that all three of us were in agreement would have gone close to ten that came up and did the very same thing. Needless to say he was both excited and disappointed at the same time. I managed to land three more in the 5 to 7 pound range and ended the short session with five good bites, not a bad start and definitely pumped us up for the next three and a half days.

After an excellent dinner by our head chef Freddie and a solid nights sleep we decided to target BIG fish with head guide Loius Fierra, a magnificent fisherman and instructor, we started with topwater in the early morning without much success. We decided at about 8:00 that it was time to hit the points and test our luck. At about the third stop I proceeded to hammer 3 good fish all over 5 pounds. The biggest was 8 pound 13 ounces, a true trophy. We struggled for most of the day landing only 4 more in the 5 to7 pound range.

Day three proved to be the hardest day out of all four. We fished with camp manager George Felix and we had all agreed to try and fish some fresh water, so off we went to the dam. The water is extremely deep (300 feet) in places, this proved to be a challenge. We fished Lizards, Senkos, and swim baits for the morning session and ended with 2 fish over 7 pounds. Not a bad morning but a little slow by Huites standards. The afternoon was not much better as we only managed two more fish around the 6 pound mark. We were trying to find a concentration of fish and had only managed one or two here and there. Definitely a tough day on Huites.

On day four our hopes were brightened as head guide Louis was back in camp after having to leave for a day and a half. We new we would be swim baiting looking for those monsters that Huites is famous for. It proved to be a productive morning hammering 4 good fish from 6 to8 pounds including an 8 pound 3 ounce PIG! The afternoon yielded three more in the six to 7 pound range. A little better than the day before but still slow by normal standards.

Our final morning session proved to be the experience I wanted my friend Scott to have. The day started a little slow as we only had two quality fish by 12:00 on the final day. Since we had got in late the first day we decided to fish to about 1:30 before we headed home. That proved to be the lucky hour. On the last stop and the last cast of the trip(NO BULL) I hooked a monster that pulled harder than any other fish that I had hooked all week! I tried to keep her from coming up but as I told the guys, she's coming up and there is nothing I could do about it! The Fat female exploded into the air just in front of us and that was all she wrote, I knew it was going to happen but sometimes all you can do is hold on!! We were all in agreement again this was a fish 10 pounds or better, a true HAWG!!! Well believe it or not the fish were stacked here, we proceeded to feverishly hammer 6 and 7 pounders for the next ten to fifteen minutes, ending with seven good ones in the last fifteen minutes of the trip!!! What a deal, but it goes to show that you never give up on Lake Huites, it is a phenomenal fishery that can and will produce a 40 pound stringer in as little as fifteen minutes on any point at any time.

I would rate our trip as fair to good, we had a lot of factors that played against us as well. The first was my timing, I had us booked in for the new moon on the 17th but unfortunately we had to change to the 2nd and that proved to be the full moon, strike one. The next was the massive number of baby bass in this lake. There were literally hundreds at every point we stopped at, strike two. The third was the unbelievably clear water, you could easily see 12 to 15 feet under the boat, strike three. On our November trip where we caught over 50 above 5 pounds, you could not get a bite in clear water but as soon as you hit the stained it was on! All in all it is always a fabulous place to visit, I have always said the fishing is just the half of it. The food, the fabulous margarities, the scenery and most of all the people(your staff) will make this a truly unforgettable place that you cannot wait to return too.

Sincerely.

Kevin Green
