LAKE OCONEE IS FULL, 58 DEGREES, STAINED

Largemouth bass fishing is slow to bite due to cold weather. Use a 1/4 ounce Strike King jig in the black and blue or black and chartreuse with a Zoom Super chunk in watermelon seed color, which will slow the baits decent. Fish the bait around and under docks with a water depth in the 6 to 10 ft range. As the sun warms the rocks around the sea walls and rip-rap during the day, fish a number 5 Shad Rap in the shad or silver/blue colors. If it gets really cold, go to the drop shot on the rocks and pilings on the bridges lake wide and add a Basstrix shad bait.

Crappie fishing is also fair but most of the fish you catch are still good. There are some big crappies being caught in brush 20 to 25 feet deep. Use a minnow and fish right in the brush with 6 lb test P-Line on a drop rig with your hook 12 inches up from a ¼ ounce weight. This will allow you to fish right in the brush. Do your best to keep the boat on top of the brush so that you will be fishing straight down which will keep the number of hang ups to a minimum. Trolling up the Oconee River at the Indian Mound is another area where good size fish are showing up.
