Fishing Report for Week of June 3, 2007 For Master Baiter's Sportfishing and Tackle

Wow, what a week, things are changing daily at the fishing grounds as those in Marina Vallarta know as they watch charter boats come in with fish boxes full and smiles everywhere. Tourist with cameras at the ready, are getting a treat when the boats come in.
But I've gotten ahead of myself. Early in the week with the Full Moon Phase just ending, it was mind boggling out there. Lots of fish, just pick a spot. But it didn't matter what you presented them with, they weren't going to take any baits, no matter what! Kinda like trying to get your kids to eat Brussels sprouts, Yuk! Chorras, Skippies, Google eyes, lures, teasers, praying, nothing could get them to take bait. I've never seen so many long faces as I did with the full moon.
There were lots of excuses why people weren't catching fish. Lots of varied baits at the fishing grounds. Including those little Krill Squids that are less than an inch long and tasty, like spaghetti in the pot. There have been jelly fish, and some sort of pinkish red crab floating around out there. Not Tuna Crabs, something else I can't even name… The point being, fish are like people leaving the table at Thanksgiving. You can't eat another thing, and then here comes the Pumpkin pie! Same scenario… what are you going to do?
Water conditions weren't helping things either. The Bay of Bandares was dirty all week, the water that is. Out past the El Morro, it cleared up and for the most part, a blue water area. Those venturing farther out could still run into the Dirty Water (brown like coffee, silt, mud, etc.)… There was a chance. But, if you found Blue Water….
Corbetena was just bursting with Blue and Striped Marlin. Big, Bad, 200 lb. Yellowfin Monsters striking trolled bait, cast bait, even no bait, just a six inch silver diamond jig. A few days later, the bait disappeared, but the Yellowfin and Marlin didn't, leaving them hungry and wanting! Anywhere around Corbetena or El Banco this week was producing nice sized game fish, worthy of mounting!
The areas north of Punta Mita are alive with large Sailfish, and beautiful Dorado or Mahi Mahi in the 40 plus inch range. Snappers are turning the sea red as they feed on surface bait. Rooster fish are in the area as well, even though the Summer Rains haven't started yet (they feed on debris in the water from the rivers, etc.). It looks like we'll have another great season with the Rooster fish this year, the true "Chicken of the Sea". But the story this week, in-shore was Sailfish 2 to 3 miles out, that's all! There were more bills out there this week than in the Postman's Mail Bag just after Xmas! An 8 hr trip can be stretched out to boat these beauties and still make it north of Punta De Mita. So what are you waiting for??
My friend Hercules (off Frantic Pace) likes to go to the "Sand Bank" when conditions are just right! Off Cabo Correntes, set a heading of 210 degrees. 38 miles out you'll find an area just alive with Blue Marlin, Black Marlin, Sails, Pargo, you name it. Being in the neighbor hood of 70 miles from Marina Vallarta, it can get expensive fuel wise if you try and make it a day trip. But those who don't mind an overnight adventure, you'll be waking up to the morning bite, in a little known area, ALONE.
This week should be off the hook for Puerto Vallarta. The season is shaping up to be more "normal" than last year.
Since you all go to the effort to read my reports I'm going to throw some extra stuff out there for you to digest! People always fear the full moon and I don\'t understand this. The Full Moon is a great opportunity to boat tons of fish! One thing though, you need to be willing to do an overnighter or get your butt out of the sack and get to the fishing grounds for the early morning bite or the Evening bite. Here in PV (Puerto Vallarta) during the full moon, Yellowfin Tuna will hit your bait, but you need to be out there at sunrise or sundown. No in between works when the moon is full. So don't complain about the full moon, make a plan and you'll be the only one coming in with Yellowfins or believe it or not, Swordfish! Night fishing is a gas, try it and you'll be hooked....
