An El Nino winter has caused the weather in central Texas to be cold and wet this year. As I am writing this fishing report, spring is beginning to take hold and the fishing will change dramatically in the next few weeks. As of this past weekend, the bass have not yet began their annual ritual to the shallows to spawn. The water temp. is still a few degrees away from the magic 60 degree mark. The smaller "buck bass" are on the banks, but the big females are still hanging in a winter staging pattern. At the moment, crankbaits and suspending jerkbaits are the ticket on nice, sunny days and carolina rigs and flipping Texas rigged soft plastics are the key on cloudy days before and during the passing of a front. Check the shallows in the backs of coves and creeks every few days this time of year, as the fish are ready and waiting to spawn!
