Tuesday September 4th 2007 River Report from Rodney Colford on the main South West Miramichi River in New Brunswick Canada. The past couple of days on the lower stretches of the Miramichi have been producing very good numbers of Fall looking fish. Alot of fish we are seeing are dark and fall looking colors but we are seeing some bright silvers leaping aswell. Massive in size some being in the 30lb plus in size! Several big hook bills (male fish) are in the river and are very aggressive in taking the dry flies. At one time this evening there was a triple header on at once where I was fishing. Mostly all the fish hooked were on bombers. I have my son Zach age 9 years on video landing a 12 lb hook bill on a bomber and broke another off because he had it on to long. My daughter Laura age 7 years lost a grilse that she had on for a few seconds and rolled two more, also on brown bombers.

My client from Ontario Len Cade landed his 1st Atlantic Salmon today and rolled another. We started out fishing at Bowns Pool this Morning and there were fish jumping and rolling everywhere. Some fish we seen were 25 to 30 lb's in the pool. The water temp was 61 F degrees and all we could do was raise one on a orange bomber. We fished until 9:30 am and then decided to go up to Edmond's Pool. Len on his first trip through the lower section of Edmond's Pool hooked into his 1st Atlantic on a fly he got from Curtis River Outfitters when he arrived yesterday, the fly was a GP#8 Double. Way to go Len. Yesterday Jeff Prices Clients Landed 2 at Edmond's Pool and 4 the day before that. All on wet flies. Joel Kitchen and guest at Hogan's Pool had some very good fishing the last few days aswell landing 5 salmon, on bombers and green machines.

With not much rain expected until Monday or Tuesday next week we can only hope the weather stays cool like they are predicting for the nights. The water is falling very fast with these cool nights we are having aswell, so some rain will be greatly accepted.

Salmon count to August 15th at the SW Millerton trap net on the Miramichi. Salmon 366, Grilse 992 this is a 8% to 10% estimate that go through the trap as of August 15th.

With so many fish in the lower stretches of the Miramichi from the Mouth of Cains River to the Foot Bridge Pool, about a three mile stretch. I think alot of these hook bills are heading up the Cains River or holding in these lower stretches of the river. Tomorrow I will give the Cains River a try and let you know how I make out. Cains River is extended to the 29th of Oct this season and we should have some very good cold days of fishing ahead there on that river.

Flies for the last couple of days were GP's, Ally Shrimp's, Brown bombers/orange hackle and Green Machines.
