Smith River Steelhead Guides Steelhead Fishing Report

Not much has changed on the North Coasts rivers this past week with the biggest news being that no measurable rain has fallen making all streams extremely low and clear. The Smith river is at the low 7 foot level at Jed Smith park gage and will be in the high sixes very soon. Although fishing conditions are tough with the low flows, catching steelhead is still possible. Downsized terminal tackle and light, strong fluorocarbon lines with small natural cured baits will produce in these river conditions. Fishing pressure has been light on the Smith River for the past three weeks. Fishing conditions and steelhead counts will hopefully improve after some more rain returns to Northern California. Side drifting small pieces of roe and a Quikie puffball will produce most steelhead as reported by Smith river steelhead fishing guides. Backtrolling Hot shot style lures will also be a great bet in the low/clear river conditions. 0 to 2 fish has been the norm on daily counts coming in from Smith River steelhead guides and bank angler's.

Eel River Steelhead Guides Steelhead Fishing Report

Eel river steelhead fishing guides are reporting some decent steelhead fishing on the Main stem of the Eel river from the Fork's to the confluence of the Van Duzen River. Scores of 1 to 3 steelhead have come in from Eel River steelhead fishing guides this week with side drifted roe and a Quikie puffball being one of the "go to" techniques. Backtrolling Hot Shot style lures is also a great bet as the Eel River continues to remain low and clear with the possibility of some rain later in the week. Steelhead have been caught in the ten pound to high teens as reported by Eel river steelhead guides in the past two weeks.

Dave Jacobs Professional guide service will be available for stellhead trips from our heated drift boat and thru March 2009 on the Smith river, South fork Eel river and main Eel river.
